Major General Pat MacLellan obituary: Officer in command on ‘Bloody Sunday’
Commander whose decision to deploy the ‘aggressive’ 1 Para in the ‘snatch’ role to arrest troublemakers during the protest march still troubles the authorities
…Andrew Patrick Withy MacLellan was born in Dunbartonshire in 1925 and educated at Uppingham School. He was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in November 1944 but too late to take part in operations in the Second World War. He served in Palestine immediately after the end of the conflict following the outbreak of violence, conducted by Zionist paramilitary organisations, and was then posted to the School of Infantry to teach counterinsurgency warfare. For the next 15 years he served with the Brigade of Guards in England, Egypt and Germany, before becoming military assistant to Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the Admiral of the Fleet, in 1961, then chief of the defence staff, a demanding post for which he was appointed MBE (Military) in 1964.
Ten years earlier he had married Mary Bagnell, the daughter of a hussar officer who had fought in the First World War. They had a son, Ian, now an acupuncturist, and twin daughters: Fiona, who has three children and lives in Chelsea; and Diana, who worked for MI5 and now teaches the Alexander Technique of self-development…
… MacLellan left the army in 1980 and in 1984 was appointed keeper of the Jewel House at the Tower of London, receiving the distinction of commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) upon leaving the Tower in 1989. That year he was elected member for the Walbrook ward in the Court of Common Council — the governing body for London’s “Square Mile”, serving for 11 years. From 1979 to 2005 he was a member and later chairman of the Advisory Council of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry…
