I was recently reading through William H. S. Leeson's Master Index of Peerages (the 2nd edition posted on 23 Oct 2021 in this group), when I decided to list all the baronies in fee now considered abeyant.

I compiled the following list based on his work with some minor updates. A question mark indicates if the barony in question became extinct/dormant/abeyant rather than purely being considered abeyant. Please note that quite a few of these are still under debate as to their true state.

The date in parentheses indicates date of creation, while the other date is the date at which the peerage became abeyant.

This list might not include baronies which are in abeyance, but subject to attainder, such as Grey of Wilton?

Not a bad idea actually, I will try to scrounge them up.

In some ways it's lamentable that the 100 year rule means all these titles are extinct baronies.

I made an error, for the Barony of Cromwell listed under abeyant baronies, it should read "Cromwell (25 July 1461). 14 Apr 1471." I forgot that the Barony of Cromwell of the 1375 creation was called out of abeyance later in the 1920s.

Marquess I know what you mean, but strictly speaking a title which goes into abeyance, does not become extinct until all co heirs die.
The 100 year rule to which you refer will change in status once the House of Lords(Hereditary Peers) bill passes.I will try and post on this topic and the effect on abeyances shortly.

I hope you're right Malcolm as it would be nice to see some of these baronies called out of abeyance. I was of the belief that that the 100 year ruling was made by the sovereign and therefore any change would rest with the Crown; I would be happy to be wrong.
