.A recent Burke's online edition calls the deceased the 12th Bt., and he would also be the 12th Bt. using the numbering in The Complete Baronetage. On the other hand, Debrett's Peerage as well as Burke's Peerage 1959, among most others, call him 16th Bt.

The confusion is because of this:   The Baronetcy was originally granted in 1644 to Sir John Acland. However ,because of all the confusion at the time of the Civil Wars, the creation was never enrolled, and may not have passed the Great Seal, and no documents exist to prove the creation, though no one seems to have doubted that the King so created him. However, to clear up possible future confusion, Sir John's younger son, Hugh, who was 5th Bt. of the 1644 creation, was again created a Baronet in 1678, with precedence from 1644. This new creation caused Cokayne and the Burke's online edition to call Sir Hugh 1st Bt., instead of the 5th, and the successors were numbered accordingly.
