Sir Michael Oswald obituary
Former manager of the Royal Studs who advised the Queen and the Queen Mother and presided over their racing interests
EXTRACT
...One morning he made his usual call to [The Queen's] page, Barry Mitford, at Buckingham Palace to say that Harvest Song was running in the 2.30 at Fontwell ... “Barry got rather excited at this, asking will it win and should he have a flutter,...I told him under no circumstances should he waste any money on it....” Harvest Song ... won by five and a half lengths. When Oswald called the Queen to ask if she had watched the race, she replied: “Oh yes, and may I say that Barry is standing next to me. If I were you, I would find some dark glasses and a good disguise next time [you] come anywhere near this place.”
...William Richard Michael Oswald was born in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in 1934 of Scots descent. He was the elder of two sons of Lieutenant-Colonel William Oswald, who during the Second World War had served on the staff of Earl Alexander of Tunis, and on the staff of General Eisenhower after America entered the war in 1941, and his wife Rose-Marie (née Leahy)....
...It was at Royal Ascot that Oswald saw Lady Angela Cecil, daughter of the 6th Marquess of Exeter.... The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were among the guests at their wedding, which took place ... on his birthday, a date he shared with the Queen. “We have a gun salute every year on our anniversary,” laughed Lady Angela, who Oswald called “the commanding officer”. Lady Angela, who was woman of the bedchamber to the Queen Mother, survives him with their daughter Katharine ... and their son, William...
