Lady Patricia Milnes Coates, who died at her home at Helperby,
Yorkshire, shortly before 24 Oct 2005, aged 92, was the widow of
Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Robert Edward James Clive Milnes Coates, DSO,
3rd Baronet (b. 27 Sept, 1907; d. 9 May, 1982).

She was born 29 October, 1912, as Lady Ethel Patricia Hare, elder
daughter of the 4th Earl of Listowel (1866-1931), by his wife Freda,
daughter of the 2nd Baron Derwent. Her siblings included the 5th Earl
of Lisowel, the 1st Viscount Blakenham, and Lady Elizabeth Hare, who
married, as her 1st husband, the Guinness heir Maj. the Viscount
Elveden, son and heir of the 2nd Earl of Iveagh (and was mother of the
3rd Earl).

Lady Patricia married firstly, 12 Nov 1936, Lt-Col Charles Thomas
Milnes Gaskell, Coldstream Guards, scion of that BLG family. He died on
active service, in a flying accident, 5 Nov 1943; she married secondly,
4 September, 1945, Robert Milnes Coates, who succeeded to the family
baronetcy 4 Sept, 1971, and died in 1982.

Lady Patricia leaves 3 sons from her first union, James (b. 1937),
Andrew (b. 1939) and Tom (b. 1942), and one son from her second
marriage, Sir Anthony Robert Milnes Coates, 4th Baronet (b. 8 Dec,
1948), and a daughter from the second marriage, Mary (b. 1947).

The funeral took place at St Peter's Church, Brafferton & Helperby,
Thursday 27 Oct 2005.

Thought the name sounded familiar - look at what I've found!

A lovely descent from the 1st Marquess of Crewe - and therefore from
the 12th Duke of Somerset and his Sheridan wife - for the late Sir
Robert. And a distinguished heir as well.

I assume that the Milnes-Gaskell first husband was descended from James
Milnes Gaskell (1810-1873), MP for Wenlock and his Williams-Wynn wife,
and related to Mrs Francis Palgrave, nee Milnes-Gaskell?

See this tribute in 2005 by her eldest son James Milner Haskell

Five children, eight grandchildren. And an interesting life as a prewar nurse when she was expected to be only a deb and marry well, then an organic farmer before it became fashionable. An early supporter of what became known as the Cheshire homes.

And her first husband Charles Thomas Milnes Gaskell was indeed a descendant of the James Milnes Gaskell MP (1810-1873) who married 1832 Mary Williams Wynn.

Their son Rt Hon Charles George Milnes Gaskell PC (1842-1919) married Lady Catherine Henrietta Wallop (1856-1935) of the earls of Portsmouth.

Their son Evelyn Milnes Gaskell (1877-1931) in turn married Lady Constance Harriet Knox DCVO (1885-1964); the marriage in 1905, a year after an earlier suitor was rejected by her father the 5th earl of Ranfurly. Lady Constance Milnes Gaskell was lady in waiting to Queen Mary, then to Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent.

Their son Charles Thomas Milnes Gaskell (1908-1943) married Lady Patricia Hare (1912-2005) and left three sons. Their relations include the earl of Iveagh (whose grandmother was Lady Elizabeth Hare), the earls of Listowel, the earls of Ranfurly, the earls of Portsmouth (and others).

Another Milnes Gaskell descendant is Anna Wintour, fashion editor. Her paternal great grandmother was Isabel Milnes Gaskell, a daughter of James Milnes Gaskell MP. Isabel's elder sister was Cecil Palgrave

There is some connection between Benjamin Gaskell MP (father of James Milnes Gaskell MP, and relative and heir of James Milnes Jr) and the novelist Mrs Gaskell.

This article (below) notes an infant death December 2016,James Edward or Jem, stillborn son of Charles Paul Milnes Gaskell and his girlfriend Valerie.
