Substance abuse and mental health challenges affect individuals, families and communities throughout Florida. We have come a long way to better understand the nature of substance abuse and mental health disorders and address stigma and discrimination. We continually strive to fulfill the Department’s mission to “advance personal and family recovery and resiliency,” and ensure Floridians get the help they need to live healthy, productive lives.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors September as National Recovery Month to highlight individuals who have reclaimed happy and healthy lives in long-term recovery and to honor the prevention, treatment, and recovery service providers who help make recovery possible. In order to support this effort, Governor Rick Scott has proclaimed September 2014 as Recovery Month in Florida. Recovery month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover. Please use the attached Recovery Month proclamation as appropriate to promote Recovery month in your community.
Helping individuals achieve a successful recovery from substance abuse and mental health challenges must be a priority across our communities. At the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program Office, we have added a new member to our team to focus on recovery and integration. Dana Foglesong, a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist, will assist us to ensure individuals and families are a driving force for improvements in the publicly funded system of care and guide policy towards a system that offers the supports needed for individuals to live a life of their choice in the community.
At this time, I encourage all Floridians to recognize the importance of recovery. Let us be mindful of the roles we can play in helping our fellow Floridians improve their health and wellness, while supporting the availability and quality of services and supports that accelerate recovery for individuals. Together, we can work toward a brighter future.
