Dear Friends
Allow us to inform you about the
“AGRONOMISTS OF THE WORLD” (AGWO), in Greek: “ΓΕΩΠΟΝΟΙ ΤΟΥ ΚΟΣΜΟΥ”, a Non-governmental, Non-Profit Organization born in Athens Greece last July 2010, now is at the stage of further expansion and development.
Founders, Associates and Members of AGWO are eminent Scientists and Professionals in Greece and abroad from the fields of Agricultural Sciences, Agriculture Economics, Economics, Horticulture, Forestry, the Farming Community, Biology, Biotechnology, Members of the National & International Research community, Academia (in Greece and abroad), Environmental Sciences, Rural & Regional Development, Landscape Architecture & Environmental Design, Urban Design, Geography & Spatial Planning, Quantity Surveying, the Landscape Rehabilitation & Landscape Contracting Industry, Irrigation Engineering, the Agricultural Bank of Greece, The Agricultural Insurance Fund, Food & Nutrition Industry, Clinical Nutrition, Medicine, Social Worker’s Associations, the Media, Trade Service Businesses, Commercial & Technical Chambers and Associations.
These fields of activity are well represented in the Board of Directors and among the initial 64 Associate Members (& shareholders) who have already joined AGWO with enthusiasm, while others have expressed their full support in various ways. AGWO is establishing a global network with “focal point” representatives in several foreign countries (USA, Canada, EU Member States, Egypt, Balkan States, Israel, Russia and elsewhere), AGWO's priorities are:
- promote the «resurrection» of a vanishing and diverse Agricultural sector in a severe «economic and food crisis» environment
- help with ideas and sound rural planning “incentive proposals”, in a way that young farmers avoid to be “modified to urban dwellers” and stay in the countryside to revitalize local “village economics”, protect the countryside and establish new life prospects for themselves and their families.
- support low income consumers and guide them to accessible, low cost & healthy nutrition solutions.
- Promote the Mediterranean diet and prevent “dog food” habits among children at school age and present/publicize study results which analyze the relationship between age and both dietary habits and leisure-time physical activity and determine nutrient inadequacy of aged groups in the population.
- provide know how and training related to Urban and Peri-Urban sustainable farming techniques for food production, Urban forestry practices, roof garden development and proper urban runoff management
- investigate the applicability and promote modern and alternative cultivation and management practices in crop production (i.e. alternative agriculture practices, integrated pest management, precision agriculture)
- propose plans and participate in projects related to the protection of natural resources and the minimization of impacts due to Human activity and Climatic Change in the production of food processes. The Mediterranean region has a long history of human modification of the natural landscape, stretching back into prehistoric times. Impacts from agriculture and nonagricultural industries have continued to increase, so that at the present time the problems of land degradation, fire destruction, desertification and problems of water quantity and quality have never been more intense.
- The “AGRONOMISTS OF THE WORLD” propose and are capable to carry out studies related to the applicability, benefits, costs, impacts and economic feasibility of “Agricultural Biotechnology” in traditional and distinctive rural environments around the Mediterranean basin (with characteristic small parcel ownership, traditional farm structures, wide diversity of crops, rich biodiversity and stresses imposed by the heat and aridity of the summer months which have striking influences on Mediterranean ecosystems – vegetation, soils, wildlife and its bioclimatic pockets).
- improve standards of living of both urban and rural populations through innovative Urban Landscape Design solutions, introduce Urban Forestry planning approaches, Urban Agriculture activities, Agroforestry practices and Spatial Planning at local and regional levels.
- support Sustainable agricultural development and environmental friendly investments at local and regional level and insist for Compulsory and Independent Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures in development policy planning & decision making.
- protect biotopes, wetlands, national parks, high yieding - well adapted tree and field crop systems and agricultural biodiversity at national and international level, promote rural landscape conservation awareness, prepare and implement habitat management and conservation plans
- Intervene on Agricultural policy decision making related to domestic agriculture and imports of foreign agricultural products, with the goal of achieving a specific outcome in the domestic agricultural product markets, a guaranteed supply level, poverty reduction, biosecurity, price stability, product quality, product selection, land use or employment.
- Provide support and know-how in Rehabilitating damaged Urban, peri-Urban, Rural and Forest landscapes from Forest fires, over-mining practices and severe soil erosion.
- Support young scientists and professionals to find their ways in the market, through practice, training, seminars, short courses and involvement
“AGRONOMISTS OF THE WORLD” is a purely scientific organization composed from restless technocrats and field professionals, not a political entity or a workers union corporation, although is free to express and take certain political positions when it is required.
“AGRONOMISTS OF THE WORLD” can provide Services by Contract and can carry projects in almost all fields, within the context of “Agriculture/Ag Economics – Environment/Landscape – Food/Nutrition”.
In addition, among AGWO's scopes is to promote any fruitful collaboration between other Associations and NGOs with similar interests throughout the country of Greece and the rest of the world, so that together we can more effectively partner with Domestic and International Organizations and each other to create a more peaceful, just, equitable and sustainable world for this and future generations.
To date, two Conferences were Organized in Athens, one in July 2010 (1st AGWO General Assembly Meeting at the National Research Foundation of Greece- EIE) and a day conference November 3, 2010 under the title: “Can Urban Landscape Development contribute to overcome the Crisis??” at the Institute of Forestry Research- IDE in Athens, in cooperation with the Pan-Hellenic Association of Landscape Contractors, the Agricultural University of Athens, the Local Government Agronomists, the Attica Prefecture Authority and the Agricultural University of Athens Alumni Association.
Since September 2010, AGWO has established the first eight (8) permanent Scientific "Task-Force" Groups composed from AGWO Members and Volunteer Scientists and Professionals already working on various relevant fields of interest. These groups have produced interesting Reports and Proposals, already submitted to the Government of Greece and Government Organizations, also published in the media.
These working groups are:
- Urban Landscape and Greenery in the City
- Therapeutic Horticulture, Gardens & Landscaping
- Agricultural Policy – Production & Trade – Balance of Ag Trade
- Biodiversity (Genetic Material and Biotopes)
- Food and Human Nutrition issues (Mediterranean diet)
- Agricultural Biotechnology versus Conventional crop production and Traditional farming
- Domestic production of Ornamental plants for Landscaping
- Agrotourism
More working groups are under discussion and establishment, as: “the Water Resources group”, “Promotion of Products of Geographical Indication - GI”, “Hydroponic production”, etc.
