2. Before you begin, a common issue to avoid for Mac users when installing SPSS, when you see the window below, do not double click to open it, instead drag that blue SPSS icon to the desktop first. Once it is on your desktop, then you can double click to open the installer. If you see an error message about "iCloud drive may not work properly" or "Cannot verify source", then this step may have been missed and needs to be done again.
To start over, after you download the SPSS application, double click to open it. Look at the very top of the Mac Install Instructions and read carefully on how to drag and drop the icon to the desktop before opening.
To avoid this problem, please be sure to close all of the windows you have open for every application you use in CloudPC. For an app like SPSS, this includes that welcome window that first opens, as well as any and all data sets you open during use.
When using SPSS for one of your classes, you will probably be asked to upload a file to Moodle. These instructions tell you how to save your work from SPSS in CloudPC directly to your computer's hard drive so that you can easily upload the file to Moodle.
Please note: In order to check the file, you will need to open it from within SPSS, through CloudPC. Trying to view the downloaded file on your personal computer will not work as SPSS is not installed on your computer.
Make sure the Citrix workspace app is installed on your computer. See Setting Up Citrix Workspace for CloudPC if needed. If you are not using Citrix Workspace, please see instructions below.
SPSS Statistics can be used to solve business and research problems through ad hoc analysis, hypothesis testing, geospatial analysis and predictive analytics. Organizations use SPSS Statistics to understand data, analyze trends, forecast and plan to validate assumptions, and drive accurate conclusions.
OK, this makes little or no sense -- but humor me...Save the data file in SPSS format on the PC with the .sav extension, and
copy it onto a floppy disk (or some other medium that PC Exchange will
recognize as a PC disk). In PC Exchange on your Mac, associate the .sav extension with the SPSS
executable and select the document type SSAV.COPY the SPSS data files to your hard drive. Don't try to access them
from the floppy disk. It won't work. (Don't ask me why).DOUBLE-CLICK the file icon on your Mac hard drive to open the data file.
Don't try to access the data file from File/Open in the SPSS Data
Editor. For some reason, the latter won't recognize the data file
(again, don't ask me why). This should work. At least, it works for me.
You say you have your data in an ascii file -- Have you tried the Read
ASCII data command under the file menu? You don't need to have your data
as tab-delimited to use that. It will read data as either freefield (in
other words, it assumes that each variable is separated by spaces), or
fixed length (in other words, you have to tell it at which character
column a given variable begins, and where it ends). Not very elegant,
but it should work. And I agree with the previous person, save your
data on the hard drive first, if for no other reason than it works a lot
faster.Hope this helps,Sylvia
SPSS needs to create a temporary file upon opening a data file. By default, SPSSwill create such a file at the C:\Windows\temp directory. It is however limited bythe available space on the C: drive. In other words, if the space on C: drive isscant, SPSS will not be able to read in a dataset bigger in size than the available space.
