Subject: ISMC-GLOSOLAN Webinar on Basic concepts in soil hydrology
Dear GLOSOLAN Members,
Have you heard the news?
We want to revitalize the topic of soil hydrology, not only by revisiting the basic concepts from a modern perspective, but also by providing participants with the most up-to-date information. GLOSOLAN, in partnership with the International
Soil Modelling Consortium (ISMC), will therefore be hosting a Webinar series on this topic.
🌿 Webinars’ Details 🌿
📘 Topic: Basic concepts in soil hydrology
💻 Format: Three online lectures held in Microsoft Teams. Each lecture is approximately 4 hours long and includes interactive elements.
🗓️ Dates & Time (CET / Rome time)
📅 Day 1: Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 1:00 PM CET
📅 Day 2: Friday, February 20, 2026, at 1:00 PM CET
📅 Day 3: Monday, February 23, 2026, at 1:00 PM CET
🌊 What You Will Learn 🌊
The program is structured to build your foundational knowledge:
🌱 Day 1: Basic concepts part I (Prof. Nunzio Romano)
• Soil Physical Properties (e.g., density, capillarity, particle-size distribution).
• Soil Water Content (definition and measurement methods).
💧 Day 2: Basic concepts part II (Prof. Nunzio Romano)
• Soil Water Potential (definition and measurement methods).
• Soil Water Dynamics (Darcy's equation, Richards' equation, water retention, and hydraulic conductivity functions).
🌾 Day 3: Soil Water Balance & Modeling (Prof. Paolo Nasta)
• Water balance components in the Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere (SVA) continuum.
• Numerical Modeling: Learn how to use the HYDRUS-1D model.
• Hands-on Modeling Exercise: Simulating water flow and nitrate transport across a multilayered soil profile.
