Dear Colleagues,

The Margaret Oliver Award is made biennially by the Pedometrics Commission of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) to honour Professor Margaret Oliver and her exceptional commitment to developing and supporting early-career pedometricians. The award recognises an outstanding early-career scientist who is active in pedometrics and in promoting the discipline, and who, at the time of nomination, has held a PhD for less than six years.

The Pedometrics Commission of the IUSS is delighted to announce that Dr José Padarian has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Margaret Oliver Award. Dr Padarian, a distinguished researcher at the University of Sydney, is a leading early-career pedometrician whose work has fundamentally reshaped digital soil mapping and computational soil science. He has pioneered the application of deep learning, cloud computing, transfer learning, and interpretable artificial intelligence in pedometrics, enabling accurate and scalable prediction of soil properties and soil carbon across multiple spatial scales. His research has set new methodological standards, expanded soil mapping to global and data-poor regions, and advanced soil carbon monitoring relevant to climate mitigation efforts. Beyond his technical contributions, Dr Padarian has made substantial impacts through education, capacity building, international collaboration, and the translation of pedometric science into policy-relevant and industry-ready applications.

Dr Padarian was nominated for this award by Professor Alex McBratney.

On behalf of the Pedometrics Commission, please join us in congratulating Dr José Padarian on this well-deserved recognition.

Kind regards,
Alexandre Wadoux
For the Pedometrics Commission, IUSS
