- Repaving of Beach Dr. FINALLY - 2 Updates

Finally! They are actually fixing the proliferation of potholes on Beach. This pic right before the gate, next to the new parking lot. The supervisor told me the County (or maybe it was NPS?) has decided to narrow the width of the road, which is why we see the cut edge and new soil/grass on both sides. He couldn't explain why they want to narrow the road. Hooray for the pothole fix, though.
Be wary coming along this stretch. There is a very dramatic 4-inch cut and a good bit of rough road where they are getting ready to repave.

Hi Greg.
I am encouraging everyone to reach out to the NPS and their local and national congresspeople about this. The narrowing is to save on maintenance costs according to two people with whom I have spoken. It is far too narrow to pass safely. Given the number of walkers and cyclists on that stretch it is tragedy waiting to happen.

Kathy, thank you for the heads up. I've been witnessing signs that the project was going to happen at some point. This is terrific news.

Years ago, I attended a VDOT community meeting over what to do
about the intersection of Shreve Road and the W&OD Trail.
Someone in the audience suggested that they lower the speed limit,
which was already 25, IIRC. The VDOT representative said that they
had found that posting a lower speed limit has very little effect
on traffic speed. It would be much better for the rangers to
enforce the existing speed limit. That, however, would probably
require funding from Congress for the part of the drive that's in
Rock Creek Park. The law-and-order justification for everything
touted by the ruling party doesn't seem to extend to the level of
enforcing traffic laws -- unless it's against people they don't
like anyway.
