Roosevelt bridge bike/pedestrian lane closed Dec. 11-22

Beginning December 11 - 22, 2025, DDOT will temporarily close the pedestrian/bicycle path on the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge for installation of foundations for new overhead sign structures. Detours will be in place for pedestrians/bicyclists via the Key Bridge and Arlington Memorial Bridge.

The bridge’s westbound right lane will also be reduced from three lanes to two. This change will affect traffic from the District along I-66 westbound, and traffic heading toward George Washington Memorial Parkway northbound and US 50 westbound. The lane reduction and pedestrian/bicycle detour will remain in place for approximately 10 days. Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow for additional travel time, and consider alternative routes.

The good news is that that plan to expand the most horrific crossing of the river by bike with a new 10’ version.  The bad news is that it will take 38 months (that of course is the usual best case scenario).

I remember trying to bike across that bridge last year. Ice and frozen-over snow had been cleared from the entrance near Kennedy Center but not at the VA end of the path. I had to lift my bike over the rail and ride a short ways in the roadway. Does the improvement include provisions to actually maintain the thing?
