Peter,
Do not assume that all riders
or ride leaders have Verizon. For instance, I have T-Mobile and would be willing
to bet my cell coverage will be next to nil.

BRC Routes for final selection as of 5/25/2015

Yes, there are rural areas that have limited cell
coverage. To our good fortune, it does not look like the BRC area is one
of them. The coverage maps from Verizon are fairly accurate, in my
experience, and they show coverage for our area, based on my reading.
Again, this will be something we can check as we go.
I'm no actuary, but the
basic math is that 2000 folks riding 50 to 100 miles in a day means somewhere
between 100K and 200K miles of riding on the day of the BRC. Given this
number of miles, the odds that someone will crash on the BRC are high. In
the past, our club has even set up first aid stations. For whatever
reason, I don't think we do that any more.
Adding a ride leader cell number
to the cue has been a help, as recently as this season. After a crash, the
ride leader is often in a good position to help out with getting the person's
bike and car to the ER. In addition to being a cue sheet service, our club
is also our support group.

While I think it's a great idea to have the ride leader's number printed on
the cue sheet, realize that it won't always be useful. In more rural areas, cell
phones can be close to useless.

Jim: I will print
30 copies of the 50.5 mile ride, giving me 60 cue sheets. I can’t
imagine we need more than that, do you? I’ll print them out on
Saturday in case there are any changes. I have one quick question on
the bottom of the first page of the 50.5 mile cue sheet: Is the 1.0 Mile,
148 ft. Alternate Version a steeper hill? If it’s an easier
hill, then I’ll test it out for you! It is going to be an adventure on Sunday!

Subject: Re: BRC Routes for final selection as of 5/25/2015 Ride
leaders (To addressees),(FYI - other BRC leaders, coordinators, and interested
parties) The route maps and cue sheets for the BRC Preview Ride from
Shepherdstown WV at 10 AM on Sunday June 7, 2015 are complete. 50.5 :
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/786960966.5 :
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/8187061 The PDF files of the cue sheets for a 50.4
and 66.5 mile ride are attached. The 50 mile route shows a variation that
adds 1 mile and 148 ft (hopefully not all in the same mile!). Check the map and
cue sheet. I’m tired of looking at them and another set of eyes would be
nice. If anyone would like to volunteer to print some, let me know. Each
PDF file is 2 pages (DUPLEX printed front and back) and produces 2 cues (left
and right side) per page and requires cutting down the middle. My ink gave out
printing Saturday’s ride and 2 Costco refills both failed to print. Pre-ride
rest rooms are available in Shepherdstown at the following places: Sheetz - 8332
Martinsburg Pike Follow WV-230 (German St.) north through town, cross WV-480,
continue on WV-45 for .3 mi to Sheetz on left. Shepherdstown Sweet Shop Bakery -
100 W German StFollow WV-230 (German St.) north for 1 block north of Princess
St. Happy Creek Coffee & Tea is around the corner from the bakery at 104 S
King St. There are several eating places across the street from the bakery in
the same block.I think it was Mellow Moods that had the good sandwiches and
berry drinks. The Blue Moon Café is across from parking on Princess and High St
but may not be open at 10 AM. They do have BEER and good sandwiches.
-------------------------------------------------------------- This 50 mile
route starts south along the river and turns west to cross over towards WV-9.The
crossing of WV-9 on WV-480 / Leetown Pike differs from an option that I rode
with friends about 3 weeks ago. This route is more scenic but this section
crossing WV-9 needs to be checked for traffic. Our ride will probably
start about 1 or more hours later than the BRC ride but we will still get
through this area before 11 AM. I have biked this section but in reverse
and mid afternoon on a weekday. I have biked most of the remainder of the
route and have driven the roads several times during route planning. 50 mile
rest stops are at mile 19.8 at Sheetz (rest rooms) and at mile 37.4 at Bedington
Cross Roads Convenience Store (rest rooms out of service). There is a
Sheetz about 1.3 miles off course north on WV-901 / US-11 with rest rooms that
can be reached by turning from Nipetown Rd left onto T J Jackson Dr just before
going under I-81 and then turning right on 901. I’m not sure how safe
US-11 would be to return to Bedington Rd.
-------------------------------------------------------------- Our BRC metric
options may be around 62 miles or 65 miles. It will start like the century
and follow the river farther south than the 50 mile route before turning west to
cross over towards WV-9 one interchange south of the interchange our 50 mile
route is using. The shortest option that can start on the river and use
this WV-9 crossing is 55 miles and probably too long for our half century BRC
ride. We will do a 66.5 mile ride so that we can observe the most of the same
roads that the century and 75 mile rides will use to cross WV-9, pass through
the congested Inwood WV area, and cross I-81 into the valley farther south than
the 50 mile routes. If we choose the shorter metric option, it will curve
north and join the 50 mile route near the Martinsburg airport before crossing
I-81. 66.5 mile rest stops are at mile 28.1 at Sheetz (rest rooms) and at mile
55.6 at Bedington Cross Roads Convenience Store (rest rooms out of
service). There is a Sheetz about 1.3 miles off course north on WV-901 /
US-11 with rest rooms that can be reached by turning from Nipetown Rd left onto
T J Jackson Dr just before going under I-81 and then turning right on 901.
I’m not sure how safe US-11 would be to return to Bedington Rd. From: Jim
