The Town of       GLEN ECHO     Chartered 1904 Residents, Please be aware of a major sewage spill affecting the C&O Canal and nearby waterways in our area. DC Water has confirmed that a section of the Potomac Interceptor sewer line collapsed near Clara Barton Parkway just south of the I-495 bridge earlier this week. This is a large regional sewer line operated by DC Water (not WSSC). Crews are currently working in the area, including removing lock gates at Locks 11–14 to install a bypass. You may see significant construction activity and pooling water along the roadway, which should be assumed to be raw sewage. Out of an abundance of caution, residents should avoid: Contact with the C&O Canal and connected streams The towpath and surrounding areas near the affected locks At this time, no timeline has been provided for when the water will be safe for recreation. Lock 10 has been reported closed, and additional closures may occur. Important clarification: This incident involves wastewater infrastructure and does not affect drinking water. Tap water remains safe to drink and is not related to this sewage overflow. The Town would like to thank several residents who contacted us to raise awareness of this issue, as we have not yet received direct notification from DC Water. We are sharing this information now so residents can take appropriate precautions. Please share this message with neighbors, hikers, dog walkers, and anyone who regularly uses the canal. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Thank you for helping keep our community safe.

I heard about this thing years ago which sounds like some jet fighter that protects our capital but is in fact a sewer line taking poop from Dulles Airport to Blue Plains, the largest advanced wastewater treatment plant in the world ( DMV - we’re #1! ).  It runs under the river into MD and then down thru DC.  Thanks Virginia.

which a quick check gives ... :

The current water temperature of the Potomac River is 41º Fahrenheit

(approximately 5º Celsius). This temperature is considered extremely cold

and not recommended for swimming without proper preparation.

Dan, when it's 10 degrees outside I'm not going to be out there dressed in nothing but my bathing suit on the shores of the Potomac.  I'm never going to get as far as even getting a toe into the water, never mind a total immersion.

Ah, but I piped up as a remark to all those dang

4th Estate articles that report how COLD it is (air-wise)

when covering some Polar Bear Club etc. event, when

Check out the Blue Plains tunnel project to handle sewage overflows. Blue Plains Tunnel Project | DC Water The project was completed several years ago.

Given the amount of shit the DC area produces (exacerbated by the Trump 2.0 administration) another similar project is obviously needed. The video on the tunnel boring machine (named "Lady Bird) is interesting if you're into big engineering projects.
