This came through the Potomac Pedalers club messaging system.  There was no attachment as referenced in the message but it should be easy to find,  Carol

Hello Cycling Community,
We’re sharing an important travel update for cyclists who use the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge.
Beginning September 15, 2026, the bike and pedestrian trail across the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge will close as the project enters its next phase of construction. The closure is anticipated to remain in place through September 2027 while crews complete bridge reconstruction and construct a wider sidewalk with upgraded lighting and fencing.
During the closure, signed bike and pedestrian detours will be in place utilizing Key Bridge and Arlington Memorial Bridge. The attached traffic advisory includes a map of the alternate route on page 3.
We encourage cyclists to review the attached advisory, plan ahead, and allow additional travel time when navigating the area.
Thank you for your patience as this important rehabilitation work continues.
Best,
The Theodore Roosevelt Bridge Rehabilitation Project Team

Thank goodness! That incredibly dangerous walkway/cycle path has terrified me for 40 years. I’m surprised that I’ve never seen news of a cyclist or pedestrian falling over the short barrier between the very narrow path and the roadway—and being maimed or killed by a passing car. Biking down M St. through Georgetown, or even the Whitehurst Freeway, always seemed a safer option than braving the TR bridge.

Next on my safety agenda would be installing a protected bike path on the Whitehurst Freeway as a safe way to get from Key Bridge to Foggy Bottom. The “freeway” doesn’t need two lanes in each direction for the limited traffic it carries.

Yes, coming right up!  This administration is very procycling.  Also, big enthusiasts of alternatives to our petrochemical lifestyle.
