McLean, Va. – The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking public comments on proposed safety and maintenance improvements along the Mount Vernon Trail and the southern section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The road and trail improvements being considered would enhance the visitor experience for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Everyone is invited to review the South Section and Mount Vernon Trail Improvements Plan/Environmental Assessment and provide comments through Oct. 24.

The southern section of the parkway includes 8.3-miles of roadway from the Hunting Creek Bridge to Mount Vernon, Virginia. The Mount Vernon Trail is an 18-mile trail which extends from Theodore Roosevelt Island to Mount Vernon, Virginia. The portions of the Parkway and Mount Vernon Trail within the City of Alexandria are not a part of this plan.  This plan involves comprehensive rehabilitation to restore the historic 1932 roadway and drainage system for the first time, including complete replacement of the deteriorated road surface (concrete slabs), repairs or replacement of drainage structures, and rehabilitation of four bridges.

The EA describes two potential plans: no-action and Parkway south section and Mount Vernon Trail improvements (proposed action and NPS preferred alternative).  The no action alternative describes the action of continuing the present management operations and conditions.  Under the Parkway south section and Mount Vernon Trail improvements, proposed improvements include:

  • New crosswalks and intersection changes
  • Trail widening
  • Reduction of lanes and pavement striping in select areas to improve safety
  • Drainage improvements and stormwater management

How to Comment: Public participation is vital to the planning process. You are invited to provide comments on the EA. Your comments will be accepted from Sept. 25 through Oct. 24. To provide comments online or get additional information on the project, visit: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/GWMP_South_EA

You are also welcome to mail comments postmarked by Oct. 24 directly to:
