Hi everyone,

I will be in Bar Harbor and Boothbay Harbor for vacation later this summer, and am wondering if it makes sense to bring my bicycle (road bike).

Does anyone know if there is a reasonable amount of road cycling to do in those areas?

Thanks!

Jodi

contact the Bicycling Coalition of Maine or visit their website. They have tons of information. Maine DOT has just put out an amazing ride guide for all of Maine that they can direct you too. It's a free guide. you just pay for shipping.

Jodi,

The national park is very bicycle friendly.

The park road following the coast makes for a fine trip, though better in the morning before the tourist rush, You can also ride to the park's highest point - a good workout like climbing up Skyline Drive.

The park also has about 50 miles of fine gravel roads that are open only to bicycles and horses. If your road bike tires won't work, it's easy to rent mountain bikes in Bar Harbor.

Jodi

For what its worth, several years ago I rode from Arlington to Bar Harbor, using the maps of the Adventure Cycling Association. http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/adventure-cycling-route-network/atlantic-coast . (paper only...I could dig mine up if you are interested). Much of the journey through Maine was on US route 1, which runs between your two destinations. It was busy but with substantial shoulder for most of the way. Maybe colored by the fact that it was the end of the 1000 mile odyssey, I do remember that stretch as one of the more attractive parts of the trip (top honors went to New Jersey….seriously!). The Arcadia National Park looked great, and I regretted that I did not have the time to stay to explore.

There is very nice cycling around Bar Harbor, and lots of places to rent bikes. If you're flying, don't fly with your bike, rent one. I'm a 100 percent road cyclist; but the carriage roads in Acadia National Park ( in Bar Harbor, are wonderful. )As I recall (3 years ago) they are mostly crushed gravel; you may be able to use a road bike on them, but I don't think it's recommended. I strongly recommend you plan to spend a day doing that.

There is also traditional road riding, including a big mountain in Acadia -- Cadillac Mountain. It's paved, but there is a fair amount of traffic on it, especially evenings; everyone goes there for the sunset. I think traffic on it would be comparable to Skyline Drive. There are also nice rollers that go along the coast, to lighthouses, etc.

So yes, do plan to spend at least two full days biking -- and that's just in the area around Bar Harbor.

If you like to swim, look for Long Pond. It's wonderful and the water is not too cold for swimming. Unlike the big pond on which Bar Harbor lies (the Atlantic.)

You're very lucky to be going there! Enjoy!

Jodi,

There is a ton of road cycling up here.

I'm currently in Christmas Cove, on Rutherford Island, in South Bristol.  One peninsula further east from Boothbay, so close to where you plan to be.  I tend to use Google Maps and Ride With GPS to create my own routes, since I always like to find old side roads, with minimal traffic.

If you use the "Find" feature in Ride With GPS, you will find many rides in the Boothbay area.

Other areas that are close by and nice for cycling are Round Pond and Pemaquid Point.  Also, don't forget to check out the world-famous Red's Eats in Wiscasset for lobster rolls that have been written up in NYT (expect a line).

Here are three rides that I have created.  The climbing figures tend to be on the low side.  For instance, I did the Egypt ride yesterday, and my Garmin recorded 3,500 feet of climb.  Felt like it, too.

Schoolhouse Loop (34 miles):  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5335852

Little Pond Loop (41 miles):  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5341691

Escape From Egypt (50 miles):  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5399028

Enjoy your vacation.

Yes Red Eats had a line wrapped around it yesterday as I crawled over the bridge heading South through Wiscasset.

Meant to reply to the group . . .

Ben King just posted a ride there to Strava.  I think it was a post-tour recovery ride.
