The Federal government has announced an intention to close the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, a favorite destination for cyclists.  There is a 30 day comment period which ends August 26.

This makes me sad.   I grew up in Greenbelt and those were my first bike rides.  Our parents gave us immense freedom (to get us all out of the house). We'd cycle all over the place and go to the USDA ice cream shop. Only the spirits know what they tested in those cows, but I'm still alive.

In high school, a researcher there (Sturtz?) used to cycle small groups of us through his lab as part of 10th grade bio on Saturday mornings.  The “bait” was playing with an electron microscope and preparing samples of tobacco mosaic virus with liquid nitrogen and some really cool electrical tricks in a super cold high vacuum chamber.

I don’t know if this spawned any biologists but it was fun
