Years ago, someone gave us an Alpine bicycle, and my daughter is trying
to register it with Arlington County. They want a serial number. Does
anyone know if Alpine put serial numbers on their frames, and where?

(For those who don't remember, Alpine was a custom frame builder in
Rockville.)

Thanks!

on Alpines, they should be stamped on the bottom of the bottom bracket
shell on the left side and running parallel to the bike.

1st 2 digits for the year
letter for the model (almost always an "A" - yes for alpine, though i
think there are some with F for fred kelly)
3 digits for the production number.

such as: 78A126

but many of the alpines were made without serial numbers as they were
purchased before being made.

of note: if you see a 10 digit hand stamped number thats dc's
registration number from years gone by, not the serial.

Alpine’s were built by a number of people over the years. The brand was initially proprietary to Georgetown Cycle Sport and then migrated up to Rockville where Fred Kelly spent years with the brand. I do not know what Fred Kelly’s discipline was with respect to serial numbers. I doubt the earliest versions had anything. One early batch became known as the Eisentraut “A” frames. As I recall most of these were gray with red panels. The seat cluster on the Eisentraut’s is easily spotted - the pinch bolt goes through the stays.

The shop had another brand CID and these were mainly put together by British builders as I recall.

Sorry, not much help.

A guy named Fred who is an on-again, off-again mechanic at Spokes in Ballston, is a lover (and collector) of Alpine bikes. If you can reach him, he might know how to reach the Alpine guy. (HMM, maybe this Fred who works at Spokes is Fred Kelly from Alpine -  but I don't think so.)

As mentioned by someone else, Alpine was at one time based in MoCo. Alpine made a tandem that fit me - the short captain - and a tall blind friend in the 1980s.

I used to work off of Twinbrook Pwy back in the early 1980s.  I remember that the Alpine shop was just around the corner.  Seems that calling a bike firm Alpine makes sense in Colorado or Vermont.  However, I think that the shop took its name from Halpine Rd which is just off Twinbrook.

There was a discussion about bike registration some time ago on this list.  Is it important in case of theft or is it a case of rules are rules?
