On an early 70's P33 ...

When the centerboard is all the way down - what is the approximate angle between board and keel?

Splashed mood indigo for the first time since Sandy yesterday afternoon and dropped the board (also first time since storm) while e boat was in slings. Yard guys on the ground thought board should drop further; I was in cockpit and control line was slack.

So, I'm not sure if this is un-seen storm damage (which means surgery when she next comes out), or just dis-use, or if the board just doesn't drop as far as the yard guys think.

I'm no expert...but could they be confusing a Pearson 33 centerboard...which appears to be angled: http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=1397

...with a Pearson 33-2 Centerboard...which appears to hang straight down: http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=1743

Hmm.. Didn't take an exact measurement, but I did take a photo.  I'd put my angle at 45-50 degrees (aft end).  Diagram looks more like 70-80.

(Will see if I can get photo loaded )

You could measure the draft with the board down and compare to published specs.

Nearly 90, but not quite...
(I only included the pic because I have one, too. :-) )

Thanks Scott - that's about what I thought.  Suspect mine was only dropping about half-way.

May see if it seems to loosen up a bit over next week or two.  Not a priority at this point in my life.

Currently, my retrieval line for the centerboard needs replacing. The only thing holding the board up is a dock line tied from port to starboard decks going under the keel! It's tough fishing the cable through.

Scott,

Take a garden hose and "blow" a heavy piece of twine, with an ugly ball of knot on the end, thru the pipe from the top to the bottom. It will go thru easily where an electricians fish will get hung up on the sheaves. I suspect this could be done with the boat in the water but have never tried it. I paid for a short haul mid season. The board must be all the way down to reattach the cable/line.  I'd suggest using some 3/16" hi tech line instead of the SS halyard cable. I would avoid using a terminal eye for the end fitting as Pearson did originally as the terminal causes the wire the bend a bit when the board is all the way up and that slowly causes the wire to fail. I used 2 SS bulldog clips and an SS thimble to make the eye at the bottom.

Have fun,

Bill

Thanks ,Bill. I'll definitely consider that.  A friend of mine recently found a nylon fish tape at Harbor Freight that seems pretty good.  I won't be able to tell if it's going all the way through until I am in deep enough water to drop the board. (It's currently being held up with dockline run underneath from port to starboard.)  May find out soon!

Scott,

The problem getting the electricians fish to go thru is that the sheave boxes do not have rounded corners so the fish tape hit's the corner and stops dead. Perhaps a more flexible tape would make it around the corners but while the guy from the boatyard went to scare up a more flexible tape I blew the string thru and had the new cable all installed. I was fighting an hourly charge on the short haul - an hour in the slings then either launched or blocked up ashore. I was back in the water in 55 minutes and most of that was messing around (bendin the leading end , bending loops into it, etc) trying to get the fish tape to go thru. The water blew it thru in seconds on the first attempt.

Good Luck,

Bill
