I pulled my boat a few weeks ago and the winter storage fee jumped over 15% this year.
Im at the Safe Harbor Marina, Toledo Beach.  They raised the rates significantly last year as well.

Are you guys seeing similar rate increases?

They cant fill the slips at the marina. And each year it seems to get worse.   So the fewer are paying more.

They got rid of the marina manager once again.  He was a problem.

Hopefully the new guy is better.

My winter storage went up in Maine as well, somewhere around 10%.  In my experience here, all marinas have long waiting lists so they can keep jacking up the costs. We’ve got nowhere else to go.

Even worse, I’m selling my boat and the marina I have her at for winter tells me I need their permission to sell it and that the storage contract is “non transferable”, meaning the new owner will need to pay again for winter storage despite the fact I have already paid. I was shocked and have escalated to the marina owner asking for an exception. Feels like a dirty cash-grab.  I would begrudgingly accept a small “service fee” for them to pay an admin to file new paperwork for the new owner, but to require the full storage fees again is abhorrent.

In the winter, I store the boat in a small, locally owned marina in Rhode Island. This year, the price went up about 3.5%. There are a couple of Safe Harbor Marinas that have increased their prices every year since they bought them. I was lucky to have found an opening here a few years ago. Some friends are storing in the water this year because they couldn't get space on land.

Disclaimer: I do NOT haul at a Safe Harbor Marina…

But I have a couple of friends that do: Safe Harbor Capri (Port Washington, NY) and Safe Harbor Glen Cove (NY)…both former Brewer’s yards).

It is my understanding that, if you haul/store at a Safe Harbor Marina/Yard for the winter, you are entitled to “unlimited” transient dockage at any Safe Harbor location.

Depending on a) how much more expensive your nearest Safe Harbor yard is than your “local” yard, and b) how much you cruise during the season…it might be worth hauling at a Safe Harbor marina/yard, just for the “free” transient dockage…

Of course you’ll have to add in yard fees if they do any work that you might be prohibited from doing…so your mileage may vary…

Yes, you are limited to three nights per location, subject to availability. Yet its unlimited, and I havent figured that out yet.   The marina did add more transient floating dock slips.  Honestly, I dont think they are used much.    My marina is a good place to be from.  There is not much to do there.  Nothing is close to it.  Like a small town, etc.
If they keep cranking up the rates I think they will keep more people away, regardless.
