Hello, Person Owners

I'm going to have to haul out and drop the keel on my P26-OD.
Anyone had the experience who may wish to share?
I'm pretty confident I know the process and what need to be done.
I'm wondering what is a reasonable time frame for the boatyard to do the work as they charge by the hour.

Thanks.

I have some info here if you have not seen it:
http://dan.pfeiffer.net/p26/keel.htm

Why do you need to drop the keel?

I have to ask, why you feel you have to drop the keel?

Take a look at Sailing Uma's videos about keel work. ...look a few forward and back for more info about how they sealed the deck to hull joint.

Thanks Dan, I have your site bookmarked,
I just bought the Pearson. it sat in attended for a while.
The bolts need to be replaced. I'm not at all comfortable with the amount of rust.
I'm hoping it from water leaking down into the bilge and not up through the hull (where the keel connects).
You site actually made me a lot more comfortable buying the boat.
Thanks so much. it's been an invaluable source.

I guess I could blame you for the getting me into this Pearson
I wasn't looking for any particular make.
After seeing this boat, doing some research and eventually ending up on your site.
I got Pearson Fever... Saw a lot of potential in it along with a lot of history.
Near as I can tell from the very well kept documents on the boat. I'm the 3rd owner.

You should be able to replace the keel bolts one or two at a time without actually removing the keel.  Unless there is an issue with the bedding or a leak or some structural issue I would consider this route rather than actually removing the keel.

If the keel bolts on a P26 are leaking, I'll be the plywood core under the keel socket is soggy, the silicone has failed and all of it needs to be replaced.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to rebed a keel of this vintage. Silicone doesn't last forever.

Yep. Going to haul out to be sure. I really have no idea when the last time it's had bottom paint. The boat appears to be pretty original. I'm hoping that at some point the bottom was maintained.
From the documents, as near as I can tell the original owner had it until 1994. It looks like it may have been a weekend charter boat during that time. The interior is in good shape for the age. Very few modifications. Even have the original ship to shore radio and depth sounder (with the manuals).

The second owner use it as a live aboard while doing research on the California Delta. Working on the hyacinth problem there. He would berth the boat in marinas around the delta.

It has a couple of leaks around the stanchions and one from the mooring cleat that drips into the chain locker.

My suspicion is the second owner allowed the battery to go dead causing the bilge pump to be non-operational. During the winter months those leaks would fill up the bilge in the back the nuts on the keel bolts were submerge. I believe (I hope) this is the cause of the rusty keel bolts, but we shall see.

Fix the deck leaks properly by removing the core around the holes. There are many "how-to" articles about the correct way to bed deck fittings. If you intend on keeping the boat, it must be well maintained.
