Rudder work / Rebuild?

Hi All, currently in the process of trying to drop the rudder and looking for some help.

Since acquiring the boat a few years ago, the steering has always felt a little "sloppy", numb, and in a certain direction (can't remember), it does not seem to perform as well, or as expected. Some of this may come down to just low speed steering performance, but I'm unsure. Regardless of that, I can see a crack that runs down the rudder from where the post enters, along the area against the hull, down to about where it meets the prop (so halfway down the rudder). It also runs back from the post entrance along the top of the rudder about halfway and then comes a little into the side of the rudder.

I am assuming I need to pull the rudder off, cut it open, and try to rebuild it with new glass.

Currently looking for some help:
How to remove the rudder post key that the quadrant sits into? We ended up grinding this down flush to get it to slide past the packing nut, but will need to remove and replace.

Can the rudder come down and off without removing the prop and shaft? It seems it cannot without at least removing the prop, as we've dropped it and it hits. It looks as the entire prop shaft is going to need to come out for the rudder shaft to come down far enough to come out.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I have have removed a rudder from a P30 with a tiller, but I have never removed the rudder from a boat with wheel steering and a quadrant.  However, you might want to check out the YouTube channel "Beau and Brandy Sailing."  They have a P35 and dropped their rudder in a more recent episode.
