One bids at $1.99 plus a $399 fee, no reserve.

My apologies to anyone attempting to sell their boat right now.

I've seen a lot of boats, some  larger, almost given away.   The market is crazy.

I would also crew for you.  Any idea if the engine runs?

Does this mean the Ebay seller must accept the highest bid?

Is something else going on?

I have had very little interest in my P36, which I thought was priced attractively at $20,000? Apparently, not.

I don't see what would change the market. And, this must trickle up to the high end used and the brand new. But, I'm just guessing.

This boat ( '85 P36-2 ) may have had some significant side deck repair?  Large patch area on port side deck.  Probably pretty typical wet core repair.  But how well was it done?

Sometimes, "free" is a bad deal.

Ive chatted with this seller about other boats.
If it sells and they receive the money, I believe they will do the transaction.
They make $399 via their fee, which is in the terms.
They are selling the boat as a service.   If the actual owner backs out or sells it to someone else, you get your money back.
The risk is that you might lose some time if the owner is goofy.   And it might take a week or two to get your money back.
For what looks like a decent boat, I'd take the chance if I was looking for a P36.

Fwiw, I was looking at another boat from the same seller and he said if I look at the boat after I pay for it and dont want it, I could get my money back.

If deck rot is extensive that might be a good reason to walk away from it.  On the other hand, deck rot is pretty easy to spot.

At this age, most of the boats out there need some work.

Sellers can set a reserve price. if the bids don’t go above the reserve price, then the auction closes without a sale. The reserve price is not published, but if you make a bid and it’s under the reserve price, then you will be informed that your bid was accepted, but the reserve price was not met.  The seller may lower the reserve price at any time so you may find that you bid is in fact the winning bid even if initially it looked like you didn’t bid high enough.

Agreed. Note, the engine does not run, and there is no title included. Given the amount of risk and time/money/frustration this second item represents, you would have to PAY ME to take this on!  IMHO, this dwarfs all other considerations.

Actually, in the Vehicle Description section, it says the motor does run.

It says the motor DOES run.  But still, I would want to get a proper look at it.

I wouldn't mind having the rig...

Sorry. I could have SWORN that I read that it DIDN’T run.
My bad! :(

Still, with just a bill-of-sale and no title, you’re going to have a merry long time of it trying to track and document the legal ownership to your state’s satisfaction, with the risk of finding that you don’t actually own it. (Seen this in divorce cases).

Getting a title varies by state.  In some states its fairly easy to get a title.  Michigan has become easier to deal with.  Just need a bill of sale.  Indiana gets confused. Ohio used to be horrible.

A 1985 Pearson 36 is not the IOR Classic built 1971 - 1973.  104 of them. The 1985 model P36 does not resemble the IOR version in any way.

Los Angeles. I got her in Annapolis in '83 and she lived at Minneford, and then Consolidated, on City Island, NY for about eight years before I moved here.

Unbelievable it sold for $1425 (plus fee?).
Honestly the interior doesn’t look bad. But no title or engine…On a 40 year old boat. Good luck with insurance. Better for parts.

It says the engine runs.

It doesnt have a title.

I have bought more than my fair share of boats in less than ideal conditions.

Whoever bought this boat will meet the owner.  They can find out then whats the deal with the title.  Then go from there.

Depending on where the boat goes will determine the difficulty in obtaining a title.  There are some ways to get legit titles without too much hassle.   Some states will title a boat from a bill of sale.  I believe thats true in Michigan now.  You dont need to live in Michigan to title a boat there.  That was also true of Colorado.  Not sure now.  They oftentimes dont care where the boat is located.

Insurance seems to be a hassle for all older boats now.  So thats awash.

If the buyer does things properly, they may get that boat for $2500 or so even if they need to pay the owner to get a replacement title.

Seems like a good price to me.

I don't view title as a significant problem.

The engine? That may be different. I have lots of stories about non working engines that turned out to be fine after a little attention (or a lot).

Was there any information about make and model or problem?

Someone DIY and mechanically inclined is likely to perform a restoration with little cost, but a lot of work and probably with a lot of satisfaction. The engine can be pulled and brought home to work on without needing a professional. It all depends. The price gives a lot of cushion to work with.

The purchaser at that price, probably enjoys the work as much as the sailing.

It would be great to have the buyer participate in our group and keep us updated. Also, we might be able to help him/her.

Jeff and Dan;
Thanks for the offer to help move the boat, it would have been a great adventure.
Too many unknowns and no convenient place to keep it once it arrived.

We don't have titles on old sailboats here in Maine. Not an issue here for insurance.
The motor looks like a 3gm, 2gm, or a variant, e.g., 3gm30. Looks to be the fresh water cooled model and the ad says that it runs?
I see about $1000 of self-tailing winches (used prices) on it if they are in good condition and it has $3,000 worth of lead in the keel.
I don't see any bulkhead rot in the pictures.
It could be a boat that you could start sailing after just a bit of work and for some folks, the perfect boat.. but it could be a pig in a poke. It's in the water, right? That's a good sign. :)

To dispose of the carcass here would cost about $1,500 in (Portland, Maine). I just arranged for a Sabre 34 for a customer and it was $1,300..
