Hello,
I have just obtained a 1988 Pearson 27 and can see that I will need to remove and rebed some deck hardware, at least the stanchions. Unlike other boats I have owned, this boat has the bolts to the stanchions concealed by a fiberglass pan, rather than a fabric/vinyl material.  It seems I have to remove the entire pan to access the nuts/bolts.

Any suggestions or tips on how to do this, or is there another way?

Thank you.

Use a hole saw or oscillating saw to neatly cut  the liner away to gain access.  Removing the liner would be a total PITA.

After futzing around with a mirror and flexible screwdrivers/wrenches/sockets, I ended up cutting through the liner w a Dremel. Too difficult to reach the inboard bolts.

Last;
do you have nay pictures to share? I'd like to see what your new stanchion bases look like.
I think making the base wider was a good idea, Even a small change in the size of the base makes a difference in the force applied at the edge of the base.

On my 31-2, a sister to yours, 4 of my 6 were somewhat easily obtained, but the 2 over the V-berth are like yours, and this year I finally cut 2 square holes about 2"x6" to gain access, and then lightly clued on 2 nicely finished pieces of wood to cover them that match the wood already in the V-berth.  Got them both off, filled the holes for the winter with 4200 and took them to my SS guy who already rebuilt the last 4.  I had his put on a new base that's 1/2" wider all the way around for more support and to cover some deck cracks, and he also reinforced the bottom 4" or so of the stanchion tube to stop it from bending and put on a new L support.  Now all 6 of mine will stand straight up instead on being bent inward as they were when I got the boat...from using them too much I imagine when getting off docks, and from shrink wrapping as well I suspect, which is why I now put in 2x4 supports on each one for the winters.

I have been following closely your work on the stantions and we have got to the stage of gel coating.  Photos and process to follow.

Question now;  waxed or unwaxed gel coat?

Thank you guys – you are a library of information and I appreciate you all

If you are applying the gelcoat to the top surface without a non-skid mold and letting it cure open to the air, use wax. On my repair of the rotted deck at a stanchion base, I put a nonskid mold down on top of the uncured gelcoat so didn't need wax as there was no exposure to air.

Thank you Al! I appreciate you!

I phoned total boat today to get more information on putting gel coat on top of epoxy and the lady there was extremely helpful.  It turns out one has to roll on Protect coat or primer (which they have run out of) and leave it for 7 days before gel coating.  That has put us back a week!!!!

I did not use any primer on  top of epoxy before I gel coated with the mold. I may have issues with gelcoat separation some day, I guess. But so far so good.
Good luck!

Description automatically generatedYesterday we painted the top of the epoxy with a total boat protect – ready for the gel coat.  Hubby put a rectangle of G10 under the final coat of glass to ensure strength of the job.  There was a lot of soaked core to be scraped out and filled so the shapes of the end results are very different.

There is a slight rise – following Uma’s example so water runs off.

Question: when making the mold from the Gel is it flexible or stiff?

Pauline when you say gel, do you mean Gelcoat?
I made a custom mold (gelcoat, one layer of 1708) first then put gelcoat on the glass repair, laid the mold in the wet gelcoat and lightly weighed it down with some sandbags/weights to squeeze the excess gelcoat out the sides.
I used this video from Boatworks Today as my guide.

Good luck and let me know if I can help.

Forgive my tardy response, we were rafting down the Delaware  River  with  the  sea scouts this weekend!
Your reply is very helpful as today we are going to the boat and I will  do the mold. I had it that it was 2 layers of glass on top of the gelcoat mold, it makes more sense that it  is  one.
Thank you again

1708 is thick enough to use just one but it’s a little delicate. Don’t forget to use a dilute polyvinyl acetate on the clean deck as a release agent.
Good luck. Keep us posted.

Thank you, Guy, I did look at these at the beginning of the project.  Our biggest ‘non-skid patch’ is slightly over 2ft so would be rather expensive.

I like the ‘homemade’ option – as long as I do it perfectly 😊!!!!!  I am reviewing the video again (for the 8th time) taking note of timings, reviewing all the excellent feedback on here and going to go for it!

This platform is marvelous for help – I am in awe of you guys – collectively you know all there is to know!  Thank you!!!!  I appreciate you

Hey Al

Is the 1708 chop strand?  Also what dilution for the PVA?

1708 is bi-axial with a layer of mat.

1708 is a 17 gram biax layer (for strength) with an 8 Oz csm layer (for bulk and resin uptake).
For PVA I kept diluting it with alcohol and water, maybe down to 10:1, used multiple very light layers dry in between.

Thank you Al for the information.
Just checked the pva And it says not to dilute but to apply with a pressure gun at 20 to 30PSi. Now we are stuffed!  I need to paint it on thinly.  Will you send me you cell number,  pau...@perhapscoaching.com so we can talk?
I don't want to continue this thread of minutiae until I have something  worth sharing.

Next question!
The gel coat that makes the mold and then is topped with the fiberglass it Is it waxed or unwaxed?
Boatworks does not answer that question

I’ve used a prevale sprayer to apply PVA.
Fun fact pva is the main ingredient in hairspray.

WAX, polyester resin requires anaerobic conditions to fully cure.
Since you are already using PVA, you could use unwaxed polyester resin and spray a barrier coat of PVA on the topside to black the air and allow the resin to fully cure.
