Prepping for new cushions throughout my ‘74 10M, and I’m going to tackle the head, hoses, and holding tank before anything new goes in.

My tank appears to be a plastic ‘cube’ in a tray held in place by the hoses and gravity. Is this the stock configuration? It has 2 vents on the opposite top corners that tee into a single line up to the starboard bow.

I want to replace the tank as I’m sure it’s permeated (u less it’s supposed to be green-ish. Curious if there’s a drop-in option out there?

I have a 1974 10M (Hull #66).

I'm not the original owner, but I thought the holding tank was an "aftermarket" install by the previous owner?

I don't know if holding tanks were an option in 1974.

It's a good idea to change the output hoses from the toilet.

I think my tank is original from 74.  It looks like a molded poly tank as you describe.  Its rectangular.  Polyethylene really doesnt go bad in the dark.   My tank has a metal strap over the top.   But the rubber hoses can deteriorate.
I wouldnt mess with the tank itself.  But if the hoses look chalky, or dried out Id replace them.
Regarding the color...who knows what they pumped into the tank.  But its very unlikely that it affected the tank.

If you buy a gallon of hydrochloric acid, it will be packaged in a polyethylene jug.
So its a very durable and chemical resistant plastic.
Chances are that tank will outlast your boats hull.

Dave, that definitely sounds like my tank. No strap, but I’ll add one. I’m planning on pulling it out and checking the seals on the fittings regardless. I need to neck down the inlet because I’m installing a macerating electric head. (Wife insists…) It has a much smaller waste line.

Absolutely replacing every hose-wastewater, freshwater, all of them.

In 1974, my boat was, and still is, on Lake Erie.
I asked AI about the laws regarding discharge in 1974, and apparently after the clean water act of 72, it was unlawful to dump boat sewage overboard in the great lakes.
So its very likely that my holding tank setup was factory, or at least a dealer installed option.

Here is what AI said:

Another comment on the installation I referred to earlier re: the POs installation of a holding tank.

I think they did that because ne (then) USCG regs required it...

But they never installed a pump out hose/deck-fill.

Needless to say, we've never used it.

To Jeff's point, macerating heads are great (different boat), because they deal with the "problem" before it enters the system...

I’ve got both a deck pumpout and overboard dump. I’m planning on setting it up so everything goes into the tank with a Y-Valve on the discharge for pumpout or overboard. Not sure if I’ll put a pump on the overboard side, as it seems like the tank is above the waterline.
Right now it’s a mess of ball valves…

Hi Jeff,
After you get all the holding tank stuff sorted out, are you making your own cushions or having them made? I made new cushions last year so might be able to provide some assistance.

Hey Jeffrey,
I have my original 10M Tank.  I changed all the hoses and installed a macerator toilet. (I don't think some of the guests like to pump!)
There was a forward water tank on the 10M and I reinstalled it,  perhaps it was taken out for racing.  I use the tank to feed the toilet fresh water (with blue additives)
since I heard stories of sea water contributing to bad smells.
Another simple additive will make the  holding tank a better place.

Puffin was originally equipped with a lectrosan treatment system that didn't require a holding tank when it was originally installed. When I bought her in 87 she was direct discharge.
I added a bladder tank and a manual pump. The head discharges directly into the tank, the outlet of the tank goes to a whale manual pump then to a T fitting. The T fitting is connected to an overboard thru hull and a deck fitting. I can pump out using the deck fitting, the one way valves on the pump do not block the flow when using the deck pump out.
