I installed the Moyer dip stick extension (intended for an Atomic 4) on the Perkins 4-108 (Westerbeke 40) in my P365.  The Perkins was actually designed so you could reach the dip stick, but then they installed it backwards in the boat.

The way to get to it is reach in, blind, through a little door under the galley sink feel around, pull it out past lots of wires and hoses, cut the back of you hand on a hose clamp, wipe it off, feel for the top of the tube, put it in, pull it back out, cut the back of your hand again, and check the oil level.  So, I installed the Moyer extension, with some modifications, to bring it out to the door under the companionway ladder.

All was good until I went to change my oil. The oil sucker tube gets stuck going into the crank case.  It's long enough, but I think it is hitting where the new pipe attaches to the old pipe.  The short term solution is to remove the pipe extension to suck out the oil, but does anybody have a suggestion for a longer term solution?

Those unfamiliar with the dipstick extension can see it here https://moyermarine.com/product/dip-stick-extension-kit-ktas_01-1_312/ .  I notice they now offer it with a thumbscrew, which might mean others have had a problem like mine (though I didn't have a problem when installed on the A-4).

Thanks,
Jeff

This is probably a plastic withdrawal tube?
Make sure the tube is small enough so there is space around the tube inside the dipstick tube.  Cut the end of the plastic pickup tube at a slight angle.  30-45 degrees.  Put a slight bend in the tube two-three inches from the end of the tube.  Insert,  and if it snags pull it back slightly and peck at the tube transition while rotating the plastic tube.  It should hop the transition due to the slight bend and the end bevel.  This has worked for me in the past to get by transitions, lips, etc.

When i rebuilt my A4 i added copper drain tube soldered to a hole drilled in the drain plug(so the siphon has a more open diameter and so it pulls directly from the bottom of the oil pan)

Can wear a threaded cap; but i installed a good non-collapsing hose for oil changes

Thanks, Dave, I'll try cutting an angle into the hose.

David, I hope I don't have to rebuild my Perkins 4-108 any time soon.  If I do, maybe I'll add a separate oil pump.  Until then, I have to use the dip stick to pump the oil out.

Thanks,
Jeff

If you have a softer tube, try a harder nylon tube.  The home stores sell 1/4" hard nylon or poly tube since its used for the water lines that feed ice makers.
