I need to find a shift cable for my atomic 4.
It runs from the Edson pedestal at the rear of my cockpit to the shift lever on my Atomic 4.
The old cable is labeled "Morse D37912-4 1081".
I haven't found a source yet or a cross reference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Guy,
Did you do the retrofit to put your controls in the pedestal? I’d like to move mine some day as it’s annoying to run them by the seat.
Any advice you can offer?

Guy,

When you bought the A-4s from me, didn't I include at least one spare cable with all the stuff?  I think I had 2 of them, but I know I removed one from the boat.  If it's not in with that stuff, it probably means that I still have it.  If I still have it and can find it, you can have it.

Charles;
The cable I have is about 1/2" to 5/8" thick.
The wheel was added to Puffin by the second owner sometime in the early eighties. I purchased her in 87.
I will check out the cable you referenced from JD.

Jim;
The atomic 4 needs a very strong cable to push the transmission into forward.
It is nice having the controls on the pedestal.
I currently have a stick protruding into the cabin from the hole where the under sink drawer should be, definitely an inconvenient shifter.

Yes maybe it was that thick  .. Mine was RED  and damn near impossible to  cut even with Bolt  cutters .

And it has the part number stamped into it .

Jim,  Maine Marine Salvage in Portland has about 15 steering pedestals, all with different types of engine/tran controls, in their yard.  Most of the steering controls look like they are made to fit on any edson pedestal. Similar to below. I'm guessing you can get an entire pedestal for < $100

The Edson controls on Puffin look like this.

You need a strong shift lever for an atomic 4 transmission.

The next time I'm at the salvage yard in Portland I'll see what they want for a set. Mike

Unfortunately, Jim's is no longer open.  He sold the land last year and no longer has any parts available.  He said he's looking at places near Rockland.  I think the next closest is a place in Rhode Island.

Yeah, that is what he tells people and it isn't quite true.  HE is no longer operating on Presumpscot st in Portland. However, the fellow that bought it from him IS selling off the inventory and plans to be open for at least the rest of this year.  I talked to Jim and he also told me that the place was shut down. It is OPEN, Weds and Sats.  You can reach out on FB to Linda, who runs the place. She is great and the prices are WAY different than they were under JIm. I just converted our P33 to wheel steering.  She charged me about $300 for just about everything I needed. Pedestal, pedestal base pulleys, pedestal guard, compass, instrument pod, large stainless wheel, autopilot drive for wheel, radial drive wheel and eye bolts for rudder post and an old 1.25" bronze stuffing box for the rudder post since I had to cut away the factory fiberglass tube.  I had riggingonly.com make me some new cables. (the drive chain was good).

Oh.. if you look like you can do it safely, Linda may allow you to climb around on the boats to retrieve items that haven't been pulled off them yet. Bring a battery operated recip to cut what you want off. I cut a hole right in the port side of a large sailboat, above the rudder post, to retrieve a raymarine rudder position sensor.

Pickings are definitely getting slimmer as the inventory has been steadily sold off over the past year but there's still a lot of stuff. If anyone wants me to check on something for them I'd be happy to.

Dang that sounds great! Thanks Guy for the link and Mike for the offer. If you make it up there and see anything resembling the Edson shift control I would be interesting getting it.

Thank you everyone for your help locating a replacement shift cable.

I spoke with Teleflex and they cross referenced the Morse D37912-4 108I cable to the Teleflex TEL-CCX64309 -- 9 ft cable which I then ordered from Jamestown Distributers.

Now I'm impatiently waiting for the cable to be delivered.

Guy,

I think you should look through the stuff that went with the A-4s.  I looked yesterday, and I still could not find that cable anywhere in my house.  I had no reason to keep the cable.  I'm almost sure I included it with the rest of the stuff.

If still interested, Linda at Maine Marine Salvage in Portland, said that the engine control section for a steering pedestal would be $25.  I took some pictures of what they have and will try to upload later.

Rocky,

I removed the shift cable, from Blithe Spirit, and repurposed the shift lever to be the throttle.  This seemed like a natural thing to do because the the electric throttle controls both the direction and the speed of the motor.  That lever has both a detent in the lever, making it obvious where neutral is located, and a removable handle to get it out of the way while you are sailing.

The linkage from the lever to the actual throttle (below deck) is a little kludgie and made of wooden parts.  I was planning to fabricate something from stainless steel later.  There is a little bit more slop in in than I liked and that can make it a little touchy.
