A few days ago, I left Barcelona for Mallorca on Skylark's first trip
since last October. To my surprise, the compass was uncalibrated to the
point that it was pointing 180° the wrong way. Needless to say, the
autopilot isn't happy with this situation.

The COG line on the Raymarine Element 12" point in the correct direction
the boat is traveling, but the Heading line is pointing 180° the wrong way.

There are no metal objects near the fluxgate sensor.

For the past two days, I have tried to compensate the Raymarine
SmartPilot X-5 autopilot only to get to the point where I am to turn the
boat in slow 360° turns and when the autopilot instrument shows the
rotating "brackets", I continue turning the boat for nada...I went one
direction in a circle for over 10 minutes and then reset and went the
other direction for 10 minutes...nada.

I tried to compensate the Raymarine ST60+ compass only to get to the
point where in "Seatrial" mode instead of rotating bracketts, I just get
a capital "C".

So...is there anyway I can tell if the autopilot or the compass are
broken? The autopilot is functioning, but doesn't want to hold the
course for long.

What a way to spend the first cruise of the summer.

Luckily, Navionics on my iPhone does pretty well.

First thing I would check (as with all electronics gremlins) is a bad ground somewhere starting with the flux gate.  And I would check the continuity in all leads in the cables between components.  And look for corrosion on the wires and terminals.

Will your auto pilot hold a wind course?

I was curious after your post so I googled it. Someone on a different forum had the very same issue happen after the compass was removed for some helm work done. It was suggested that perhaps the compass was reinstalled 180 off or......apparently some compasses have recalibration  magnets on a tray at the bottom of the compass(not sure I ever heard of that but what do I know). Someone else said this happened to them and they removed the compass, turned it upside-down and around to get the bubble to reset the rubber line. I am not suggesting you perform any of the above, just throwing out to you what others said they did in a similar situation.
Let us know what you end up finding?

Hi, I have a 1988 Pearson 27 with a stainless steel pulpit that was damaged in a recent storm.  I am looking for a used pulpit. How do I go about posting a "wanted" on this group?

Hi, typically, what you do is to send an email to pearso...@googlegroups.com with a new subject line.  That's all there is to it.  That will start a new thread.

As far as your problem, you might try Minney's Yacht Surplus.  They will mail nation-wide.  http://www.minneysyachtsurplus.com/

There is a consignment shop in Salem, MA, that was parting out some Pearson boats, but I can never remember the name of it.

You might try Marine Consignment of Wickford (RI).  There were some pulpits in there the last time I was there (last fall).  Their website appears to be down as I write this, but you can look them up and call them too.  http://www.marineconsignment.com/  (401) 295-9709

Hey, does this one work for you?  https://massmarineparts.com/pearson-bow-pulpit/

The thing is that you will probably not find one from your same boat, but there may be ones from other boats that will fit.  You need to get the dimensions and, probably, call around.

Otherwise, you can have one custom made.

Hope this helps,
Jeff

Thanks Dan,

Nothing on the boat has substantially changed. I will chase the wiring
from the fluxgate sensor.

My main problem seems to be neither the compass instrument or the
SmartPilot instrument will let me get out of compensating mode. Both
displays seem fully functional, just showing wrong headings.

The chartplotter is showing COG, just the heading is wrong. Like new
cars...too many electronics.

Will your auto pilot hold a wind course?

Never tried that one. I don't have a thru-the-water sensor, so I never
know true wind.

I had a Raymarine autopilot from that era and it was junk. It would calibrate, but still wouldn't hold a course.
I replaced it with a New Raymaring EV100 wheel pilot and it works well.

Also, I have seen weird and erratic behavior of my instruments when the battery voltage dropped.  Displays looked fine but data was all screwy.  Check that you have a full 12V at the instruments.  A bad ground could result in low voltage at the instruments too.  I would also check and clean and coat with dialectic grease all of the connections.  You are in a very challenging corrosion environment.
