New hoses for Pearson 10M cockpit drains

Its time to replace the hoses that drain the  cockpit in my 10M.  The hose in place now appears to be 1.5 inch ID hose.  It is steel reinforced hose which is not fun to work with. 

Has anyone replaced these hoses recently?  What did you use?  

I can get generic fabric reinforced indistrial hose.  Id like to avoid steel reinforced hose.

Thoughts?

I replaced mile a few years ago.  I use 1.5" exhaust hose.  Trident -Flex #250-1120.

I humbly think you don't need wire reinforced. If your cockpit drains see a lot of pressure, you have much bigger problems.

I replaced mine (P26) with wire reinforced. Just think it’s prudent for any hose connected to a below water line sea cock.

Last spring (2025), when I had to replace the wet exhaust from the exhaust flange back to, but not including, the water lift muffler, I used Trident Marine 200 Series Soft Wall Wet Exhaust & Water Hose for the final section (to the muffler):

I don’t think the 200 Series has any wire in it. But then again, it wasn’t going to a thru-hull.

But any local chandlery should stock the full range of Trident hose, no?

I agree with this. Especially considering at least my scupper is made of fairly flimsy PE fitting. Definitely the weak link in the system. 

Hot water from the galley sink doesn’t really change the strength requirement.

I live in Farm country.  If I need combine hose, no problem.  Im better off ordering it.  

I never thought about the cockpit scuppers, but they are 50 year old plastic pvc or poly? ..   Hmmmmm.....

Ill look for some replacements for those as well.

Hmm,  It takes maybe 4 feet of this hose to do both drains.  What possible reason could there be to not go full-out premium on the hose when it could sink the boat if it fails? 

BTW - I replaced the hoses when I got the boat in 2001 and they needed replacing again in 2021.  So about 20 years lifetime.

Agree completely with high quality hose. But the wire in a hose is there to keep it from collapsing under vacuum (think suction side of a cars water pump) and it helps prevent kinking on sharp bends. It does little to nothing for bursting strength or durability. But the obvious answer is use what feels right to you. Other than being a little harder to work with, the wire won't hurt.

Cost really isnt an issue for 4-5 ft of hose. 

I was looking at the hose setup on my boat yesterday.  The starboard hose has a plastic tee in it between the big bronze thru hull and the cockpit flange.   This tee is for the galley sink drain.   That tee looks really old.

On the port side there is another tee in hose for the manual bilge pump drain.   Im not sure what thats made of. 

Im not a big fan of steel reinforced hose.  Its stiff, very hard to cut, and difficult to clamp with conventional hose clamps.

Im wary of clamping new steel reinforced hose onto ancient plastic cockpit flanges.  Id hate to crack one.   If I did, would I even realize that it was cracked?

A small crack would probably result in a small leak that would put some seawater or rain into the bilge. 

Switching to marelon fittings probably would be the way to go. Not much harder than just replacing the holes.

I like the idea of a flush fitting.   The existing cockpit fittings look like cheap plastic thru hull fittings.  They arent flush.   

That softwall trident hose looks nice.  

Im going to need to do something to get better access to the port hose.  Im not pulling the engine to replace the hose!  😄

Slight change of subject....  

This is a photo showing the bottom of my pedestal with the steering cables turning  towards the rudder.  Dan, this is a lot different than the steel plate that rusted away on your 10M??.   Im really surprised how different this steering setup is from your boat?  

Back to the cockpit drains...you can see the white plastic fitting lit up in the picture.  Thats the port cockpit drain.  So this plastic is clearly being affected by sunshine/UV!

My scupper fittings - must gave been done on a Wednesday at factory

My replacement for plastic tee - small hose is from heat exchanger discharge for electric motor. Sink drains to different seacock.

My solution to that rusted broken steering idler plate that was picked at factory on a Friday.  So far I like it.  Pros and cons later.

Dan, your boat had the shiny SS drains when you got it?

They must have run out of SS drains and stopped at Walmart to pick up some plastic drains get my boat out the door Friday afternoon.   😄

Your hoses were in rough shape.  Mine are clearly aged but not cracking like that.

Not SS, bronze.  They weren't shiny.  I made them shiny.  Now they are not shiny again.  But they are still bronze.

I used flex pvc from west marine on my p26. Replaced them 15yrs ago. Still fine. Have to warm them up with a heat gun so they give a bit getting them fitted the the flange.
