I though converting to LED would be simple, but alas, not so.  I have the three original Perko navigation lights that take a Festoon style bulb.  Of course I want as bright a replacement LED as I can get.  At first I ordered a set of Festoon 12 volt bulbs based on appearance on line and received 41 mm bulbs.  Of course the Perko Nav light take a 31 mm.

Now again on the WEB, I find 31 mm bulbs around 6 dollars rated for .2 watts.  Another from West Marine for $15 rated at 1 watt, but they look pretty much the same.  I don't know what the wattage of the original bulbs might be, but I certainly do not want to go with anything less bright than the originals.

No doubt someone in our group has been through this process ... I hope ... and can provide some guidance.

I also plan to change the bulbs up the mast, especially the one at the tippy top, the mast head light so I can find my boat in the dark in an isolated anchorage.  I panicked last summer when I got to where I thought my boat was and couldn't find it at first.  I had not left the mast head light on because with incandescent I was concerned about draining my old batteries.  Batteries are now replaced, but I'm still in the habit of conserving electricity, but would feel more comfortable with an LED at the top.  Problem is I am terrified to go up the mast, but I have before and will again.  Once I get there I am not sure what I am going to need to replace what is there.  I think its original, but not sure.  I'll bring a variety of LED bulbs with me but its just a guess.

Main thing now is to replace the Nav lights or just return to the incandescent.

Looking forward to suggestions.

You can't compare Watts.  That's the power draw and incandescent bulbs will always be a much higher power draw.

Brightness is typically expressed in Lumens.  In some cases, the specs may show comparisons.

Here's one bulb from West that only draws 1 Watt, but it puts out 60 Lumens (10 Watt incandescent equivalent according to the description).

I have an aquasignal multi function fixture at the masthead, I think I purchased Dr. LED bulbs that specifically listed the fixture I have.

I replaced my deck, steaming  light on the front of the mast with one from marinebeam.

Our Most Recommended LED Masthead Steaming/Fore Deck Light! Our new 3NM LED Combination Masthead/Deck Light is certified to meet USCG/COLREG/CE & ABYC A16 requirements for vessels up to 20M.
my deck mounted navigation lights have eBay LED bulbs.

I just squandered 97c at Walmart on a solar powered walk light that I plan on leaving in the fishing rod holder on Puffin's stern rail. Something to aim for when I'm rowing at night. :>)

I always thought that those "all-in-one" masthead lights were unclear.
It seemed to me that a sailboat with one of those tri-color lights
didn't really define the red/green when headed directly at me. It seemed
the red and the green fused together and just looked white.

I updated my original Perkos to newer models with tungsten bulbs, but
the tungsten bulbs melted the plastic lenses. Does anyone remember when
Perko lenses were glass?

I found the LED bulbs in festoon style to be a little dim. I am sure
that they are not USCG approved with a 2 mile range. My European
inspector never even looked at them turned on.

Having said that, when I am sailing at night, I don't assume any other
ships can see me, I assume that they aren't even looking at their radar,
AIS or off the bridge. So I just count on seeing them first.

All of Skylark's lights have been converted to LED except the steaming
light and that is only on when the motor is running.

I replaced my incandescent bulbs in Perko nav lights using LEDs from Marinebeam.  Great service and and crazy bright bulbs.  Important -- for red and green nav lights, you need to order a red and green bulb (don't rely on the colored lens).  Also, for white bulbs (stern, steaming, spreader, masthead...), be sure to order cool white and not warm white.

Extremely happy with this purchase.

Curious why you can't rely on the colored lens.  Are the white LEDs so bright that they over come the color in the lens.  I am asking because your info came a little late and I've already ordered the 31mm LEDs from another source, but all in white.  Your recommendation, however, inclines me to reorder from Marinebeam.

Apparently you had an experience with the white bulb in the colored lens?

No personal experience, but purchased red and green LEDs on the advice of a Marinebeam salesperson.  The bulbs are very bright.  From their site:

"These 31mm (1-1/4 inch) LED SMD festoons are perfect for replacing 3-10W incandescent festoons used in many courtesy lights and Perko bow lights. These also work great in the floor level courtesy lights (foot lights) found on the newer boats from Beneteau, and other builders.

The FS-31-04 will also fit in Perko 1100 Fig. 71 Port and Starboard Navigation Lights where the boat has separate red and green fixtures. If you have separate bow fixtures, choose red and green bulbs respectively to achieve near-perfect transmittance.  For other Perko navigation and anchor lamps, see our new Perko 31mm replacements or see our Perko Selection Guide.

  • Input Voltage:10VDC - 30VDC Constant Current
  • Wattage: 1W
  • Amperage: 0.080A
  • Lumens: 80 CW, 65 WW
  • Color Temp: 3100k WW
  • Beam Angle; 120°(FWHM)
  • Dimensions: 31mm x 12mm x 10mm"
Bulbs are $10/ea from Marinebeam.
