but there's really more to life than sailing, or so I'm told.

Whoever wrote that should be hung from the yardarm.

British sports cars we used to own is a dangerous deep deceptively deceiving discussion, I urge caution.

Is it true that if they didn't leak they were out of oil? Or was that only their motorcycles?

Yes, very dangerous.  I used to have an MG-B GT that seldom ran.  I here that VW uses Lucus electrical components, these days.

Jeff
I now have a 1999 Mazda Miata which actually starts when I turn the key and doesn't leak oil.

British Sports Cars and "The Prince of Darkness" are a virus that has infected Pearson Sites for years.  It's a time honored tradition to bring them up periodically.

My local TR3 parts guy used to sell me non Lucas parts that he had tested on his own car and with each part he had a little schematic drawing on how to wire it properly.  Unfortunately he never discovered a replacement for the silly dashpot carbs.  Somehow putting a tin can sideways into the throat of the carb never made any sense to me. Never did understand how they operated and I hope I never need to know.  An Atomic 4 is just my speed. I understand exactly how every thing works and how to fix what broken.

How do you like the SC430?
I've been looking at that for some time.
All the blog reviews are 5 star.

Where do you put the rudder, and I certainly hope you add a Pearson insignia.  This isn't my listserve, I am just a member, and not a very active one, but would love to see more about Pearson boats rather than 430s.

So I will pose a question, my 10M has a tiller, and I have come to love an autopilot (different boat).  In a perfect world, I would do an underdeck, but since I have a tiller, there is no portion of my ruddershaft under  the deck which is exposed, unlike a wheel steerer.  Has anyone either cut the rudertube and added the bearings and shaftseal, or used an above decks autopilot, such as a TP 32?

When the wheel was installed on our tiller equiped 10M, the rudder tube was cut and a stuffing box was installed on the rudder shaft. The quadrant for the wheel is clamped to the shaft above the stuffing box.
This may have left the upper end of the rudder shaft with less support then in the original configuration, I say may have because it was the previous owner who installed the wheel.
I observed cracks in the gel coat around the top of the rudder shaft where it comes thru the cockpit floor and some minor movement of the shaft. To better support the area I fit an 8" wide teak plank to the aft end of the cockpit with a hole in the center sized to support the top of the rudder tube. The teak plank stopped all lateral movement of the rudder post.

The owner of a mid-60's MGB recently accused my '67 Porsche 912 Targa of having the same electrics as his car.
Nothing could be farther from the truth!
Neither of us can drive in the rain, but with the Porsche that's because the seals for the targa top are 45 years old & leaky, not because it won't go through a puddle without shorting out!  Porsche used mostly Bosch electrical "stuff"on my car.
Can't speak to earlier VW's but my '99 Golf doesn't have Lucas electrics either. Thank Gott !

I have visions of how incredibly great it would be during the day on a longer trip to raise the tiller out of the way, and simply dial in the below decks autopilot.  I had a balljoint failure on the autopilot on the other boat between Georgetown, Exuma and Marsh Harbor, Abacos, and had to hand steer for about 12 hours before I could put into Eleuthera and get someone to do a temporary patch with a welding torch, and I never really appreciated an auto pilot until then.

But keeping the tiller, which could be raised up, and having a below decks unit for longer hauls, would have us playing dominos in the cockpit.

I just also noticed you have #6.  We have #14.  What did you do about your chainplates, and do you still have your A-4?

Gaet a self steering vane.  Probably pick up a used Monitor for around $1500.  Will steer the boat anytime you are sailing and doesn't eat.  Buy a cheap tiller pilot for powering.  You can also hook that up to the Monitor if you want very low drain compass steering.  Wouldn't screw up a good tiller set up by chopping the standpipe and adding maintenance headache of a shaft seal.
