I was hoping to not have to purchase a new rudder for $1600+ for a Pearson 26 I just purchase.  We snapped the rudder off on the maiden voyage :/  If I can't find one to purchase, does anyone have a blueprint and tips on building one myself?

Thanks for the info!

Not sure if the Pearson 30 rudder fits a P26 but I bought one off this guy last year.  He also has other rudders that may fit:

mass marine is a good suggestion, i've purchased parts from them in the past.
I'd also check craigslist for a free or nearly free P26.

These days, one can get the whole boat (P26) for free or next to
nothing. I have one that I can't sell for what the outboard is worth...

I would not buy an old Pearson rudder if it had the aluminum rudder
post.

Early P26s and P30s used aluminum for the rudder post, which must have
led to some failures, as Pearson was exchanging the rudders at one
time.

My P26's rudder also just fell off one day, but I steered home using
the engine. I knew that the post was corroded where it sat against the
lower bearing and the anaerobic corrosion finally took it's toll.

I paid D&R $1000 for a new rudder with a stainless steel post, back in
1991.

I would find a rudder from a P26 or a P30 which have the same size
rudders, make a mold from the existing rudder blade and build a new
one. I would use all stainless steel for the rudder post and the "ears"
or fingers that would be welded to the rudder post.

There are plenty of articles in magazines or on the 'net that detail
how to build a rudder.

I know where there is a P26 on Long Island that you could make a mold
of the rudder from.

Should be a good winter project...

There has been a P26 on eBay.   BoatAngel was selling it and it didnt sell at least twice.   About $1000 after fees.

Yikes! My P26 is a 1970 hull #154.  Is this a usual problem with P26's?  I sail in fresh water.

Well that depends on whether you still have the rudder with the aluminum stock. When I bought my 1971 P26, Hull # 226, it was with the aluminum stock and it was badly pitted. I tried to repair it- A waste of $400. In the end I bought a used rudder with the SS stock on it. The newer rudder is also smaller and the boat is better balanced (less weather helm) the newer rudder seems to be configured better.

What type of boat did your new rudder come from?

it would also be helpful to post a picture of the replacement rudder.

I know the first 200 P30's had aluminum rudder posts which were recalled and replaced with SS, not sure about the P26's though..

There was a machine shop in Gloucester that made some SS shafts for a sailboat livery that had a bunch of P-26s. They apparently mated the SS shaft and the aluminum original which apparently was hollow. I don’t know how they handled any electrolysis issues.

Thanks for all the information folks!  I just procured a free rudder minus a post.  I'm going to attempt to restore it and add a stainless shaft.  Now I just have to figure out what diameter shaft I need....
