Greg, I did this with the radar cable in the mast with it up. One detail I wish I had known about ahead of time was that the cable actually runs through a conduit that is in the mast. I drilled a hole through the mast below the deck and put an inspection camera in there so that I could see what i was doing and this was the discovery that I made. I believe the radio cable goes through a conduit as well. What is wrong with the one that is in there already I put in a raymarine VHF radio and just used the original BNC cable that ran from the antenna to the radio and just replaced the antenna on the top of the mast and it plugged right into the antenna as well as the back of the radio. Any way good luck I as I said I did the radar cable run and it turned out to be a fairly straightforward job just connected the new one to the old one from the top and pulled from the bottom. I had my dad pull as I fed it from the top down. Make sure you secure them to each other really well if they apart during the pull its pretty much game over. You will have to run a fish tape or something up there to pull the cable through then. Good luck let me know what you end up doing.

Anybody successfully replace the VHF coax in the masts with the mast up?
We are planning to cut off the connector at the antenna, attach the new
cable to the old at the top of the mast and then attempt to feed it through
from the top. Any comments or suggestions?

thanks!

Thanks, Lee.  Sounds like there’s hope - as long as the cables are wire-tied together as a single bundle…

We’ve been having problems with our VHF reception. The antenna cable is probably original and probably suffering from water intrusion. So it’s time to replace it. We’re also installing an AIS transponder this summer so it seems like a good time to get it all fixed at once.

We’ve got wire lube and I’m planning to ‘sew’ the cable ends together through the braid very securely, and then tape over the sewing to help the joint slide through OK.  Hopefully it will go smoothly.

thanks
greg
