I have a small leak in the fuel tank. Any suggestions on how to remove and replace the tank? Thanks

Hi Jerry,
The fuel leakage is a well established weak link in the Pearson line.      The 422,424, 365 were available with optional stainless steel tanks from the factory.   My 1980 Pearson 365 had the sinless option,  still no leaks.  You can find many tales of fuel tank woe on the Pearson 424 website.  Please take a look,  I think you will find it helpful.   The hull and the propulsion system are the same on the 422 & 424.
If I remember correctly,  the old tank may have to be cut up for removal from the hull.  A new replacement can be fashioned from .125 alum but needs to be 2-3 inches smaller in width and height to make it thru the companionway hatch during re-installation.
It is interesting that you mentioned the you are considering turning the boat into a floating condo in the carolinas.   That is essentially how I was approaching the purchase of your boat.   The rental of the slip and use of the mooring in Abaco were as important as the purchase of the ship itself.    I was planning on buying into a lifestyle and community.   Ironic, your friend with the slip is a commercial pilot.    I currently live in an air park community and fly my plane to vacation spots up and down the east coast.    My neighbors, use of runway and hanger space all came with the airpark property.    Abaco would have been the Marine equivalent of the situation I was looking for.
Please let me know how things pan out.

P.S.    I am still going to use my silver Air ticket to come and take a look around for a few days.    If you would like to meet for lunch or a cold beer,  just let me know I'm buying.   I love talking about sailboats and old airplanes.
Best Wishes and thanks for you time an energy.

Hi Jerry, Those fuel tanks come out pretty easily. just unscrew the
top of the settee and the thing is completely exposed. Theres a place
in Lanoka Harbor, NJ that builds custom fuel tanks. I just can't
remember the name of the place. When I worked for the boatyard they
built tanks for several different boats for us.

Hope this helps, Bill

Thank You so much Bill. My Boat is in the Bahamas and I will look into replacing the tanks in Marsh Harbor, Bahamas or there is a weld shop I have used in West Palm and ship them over by a friend on his return to Abaco...Thanks again, it is reassuring to know that access is not too much of a problem...Jerry

Hi Steve, Just to update you. I received an email from the Pearson 422 owner of hull# 7 who is just 18 miles from my boat and we will try to connect when I am there. Perhaps you will be there for the 1st annual Pearson 422 meeting!!!  Hope we can have you for dinner. Call me after you get settled. Where will you be staying? It might be nice to rent one of the villas to get a feeling for the are. You can contact Shawn or Mike Roach at www.brigantinebayvillas.com.  We have a few friends with boats that fly to the Bahamas so if you buy a boat you may end up coming over on your plane. Mike has a plane and usually flies in on it...Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the invite.  I think I need to be at that meeting as  I am only looking for Pearson Sailboats.   Had my fill of Gulfstars, J Boats etc...    What is the status of Aquanauta at this point ?
I have been following the Pearson Owners blog.   Did not realize 422 was so much different than my 365.  We had to cut the tank in half to get it out of the Bilge.   Happy to hear fuel tank replacement is much easier time than I had.   Will contact Shawn/Mike.
Steve

Florida Marine Tanks built the fuel tanks for the Pearson 422. They still have the plans and will make you tanks in 0.125 wt aluminum. I replaced both of mine. Not difficult at all.

Gary, Thanks for the info. I will call them tomorrow. I have the boat in The Bahamas and am getting it ready for listing it forsale. If you know anybody interested in a 422 modified with a hard dodger and extended transom with swim platform (resulting in 3 more feet in length) please give them my contact info...Thanks again...
