Hello,

I've been working on guitar amps for the past 20 years, some
professionally. I've been unemployed for over a year now, and have a
stash of tubes and a few amplifiers I need to turn into cash. Trying
to find NOS tubes to keep my stable of amps up and running is getting
to be more and more difficult, so I've arrived at a point where I want
to replace my tube amps with a solid-state amp that can perform like a
tube amp but not need constant tube replacement thing going on.

After a little research seems like Pearce amplifiers are the way to
go. I really like the design philosophy Dan had about making an amp
the way he would make it for himself. Not many companies out there
that follow that line of thinking anymore!

Well I'm excited to get into Pearce amps and am grateful for this
forum, not much info out there on Pearce products.
I'd like to find a G2R (wouldn't we all). Having worked on and build
both solidstate and tube amps I'd be willing to take on something that
needed repairs but of course it's always nice to find equipment in
pristine condition and bypass all that together.

I have a few questions, and I'd like to make a few observations about
some of the posts I've read. With the intention of sharing knowledge
and learning for you all, never to be critical or trying to be a know-
it-all. The more I build amps the more respect I have for those who
have actually put a product out there on the market. I don't think I
could ever do it myself, the loss of hair would be tremendous!

First my questions:
1) Has anyone ever gone thru a Pearce amp and did an electrolytic cap
replacement? (power supply, signal path, bypass caps) Would any of the
newer types/brands be of any benefit? (Panasonics, Sanyo, Elna...?)

2) Are there any new opamps that would be an improvement to the stock
devices used? (The National LM4562 for instance is supposed to be a
super low-noise omamp designed for audio).

3) Are there any readable schematics available out there? (I saw the
website that has the G1 schematics but I can see the part numbers
clearly).

4) Anyone have a G2R they'd be willing to sell? (I'd ask for a G3 but
that'd be wishful thinking)

OK, now a few observations I hope will be helpful to the forum...

1) Noticed a discussion about reverb pan feedback on a G1. I've had to
repair this problem from time to time (the problem being the pan
itself is resonating) and found two pieces of weather stripping (self-
adhesive type) attached to the top, running the length of the pan will
solve the problem. (an old Fender trick).

2) I noticed some concern about the use of WD-40 on electronic parts.
I've read else-where about the hazards of WD. One thing I've
experienced is that the solvent in WD40 will corrode ferrous metals,
even though it does eventually evaporate. It also leaves a gummy
residue behind. The Detoxit cleaners, especially the Detoxit Gold
seem to be the best products for cleaning and preserving electronics.
Just saying...

Looking forward from learning from you too...

TT

Hey TT - Welcome to the group. I've been a Pearce user since 1988 and
have owned just about everything Dan has made. I've hung on to the 5
things I love and use most (G1.7 hardwood combo, G2r combo, A1
prototype, A3, and a 1x12 cab). Don't worry about finding a G3 - the
tube distortion channel wasn't great. The G2r has a much better tone.
I have a studio tech background and have recapped dozens of consoles.
Never had a need to recap a Pearce tho. I'd be very interested to find
out if recapping them made any difference. I have excellent copies of
the G2r, G1 and G1.7 schematics. One of these days I'll get some
copies made. Same for the op-amps - never had a blown one so never had
to replace 'em. Again - I'd be interested to see if there was a
difference - especially if they made the amp quieter. Keep your eyes
on eBay - G1's and G2r's come up all the time for very reasonable
prices. Best - Eric

Hey Eric -

I'm interested to hear your opinion on the differences between the G1.7 and the G2r.  I have the 1.7, and played with a G2r only briefly.  My recollection is that I liked the clean channel on the 1.7 better, and disliked the Alesis effects.  I'm guessing that Channel 1 on the G2r has a much smoother distortion mode though.

I'm also recalling that the G2r might have been more fiddly wrt tone and channel setup.

Thanks for the reply. It'd be great to have some decent schematics for sure.
I'll keep an eye out for the G1 & G2. Thanks for the tips...

People have paper G2 schematics--it's just too big to scan effectively without cutting one up.  The G1 jpeg schematic needs to be downloaded and zoomed to be of any use, but yes, it's tough to read.  Same scanning issues there.
