Providence Police District 2 Neighborhood Crime Watch Meeting

Wednesday, April 24... 6:00 - 7:00 at 770 Broad Street*

March Meeting re-cap:

A hearty thank you to Juan Carter, Senior Street Worker from The Institute for the Study and Practice of Non-Violence who helped us to understand better how gangs function in our neighborhood and explain the Institute's work so that we can build more informed personal and community-based responses to gang related violence.

Two people at the last meeting were witness to one of the March shootings on Broad Street. Our guest speaker and our police Lt. Oscar Perez were called out of the meeting due to another shooting, the first homicide in the city.

Understanding better the vital role that the Institute plays in diffusing and reducing gang violence, we as the PPD2 Neighborhood Crime Watch group decided to draft a letter to the Mayor to urge him to find/restore funding to increase the number of Street Workers at the Institute for the Study and Practice of Non-Violence from the most recent drop from 11 to 4.

Do note that since these shootings in March that the district has been “relatively quiet”; this from Lt. Perez earlier today.

April 24 Meeting agenda

1) Reviewing/signing the letter to the Mayor to urge him to find/restore funding to increase the number of Street Workers at the Institute for the Study and Practice of Non-Violence

2) Lt. Oscar Perez will report on current crime activity

3) Follow up on February meeting's Nuisance Properties Task Force presentation and discussion: what is needed for next steps

4) Other neighborhood concerns and announcements

Please tell your neighbors know about this meeting. Thanks.

The meeting will be facilitated by Doug Victor, Chair of the Providence Police District 2 Neighborhood Crime Watch.

*A thank you to Community Works Rhode Island for the use of this meeting space.
