Sunday, May 5, 12:30 to 2pm: Jane's Walk: Understanding a Northern Elmwood Neighborhood
Meet-Up Location: Mural side of the Dialysis Center of RI, 9 Plenty St
Take a walking tour of northen Elmwood and experience the complexities of an urban neighborhood working to re-create identity itself. View an exquisite mural
(nearly hidden from the public), a community-built playground and park, and a community garden amidst a significant urban heat island, vacant lots, and foreclosed/boarded houses. Walk the center street of a National and City Historic District rich with history, including the historic Knight Memorial Library and the home of the Knight Family, who started Fruit of the Loom. Follow up with a tour of the Broad St Synagogue described below.
The tour is one of dozens of Jane's Walks (
and one of six walks in Providence) taking place around the world the first weekend of May. They are led by locals and honour the writer and civic activist Jane Jacobs. Find more information at www.janeswalk.net/

Sunday, May 5, 2 to 3:30pm: Memories of the Broad St Synagogue: A Tour
Location: Broad St Synagogue, 688 Broad St
Home to reform and orthodox Jewish congregations since 1911, empty since 2006, and now the focus of a revitalization project, the synagogue at 688 Broad Street has been a community anchor in a century of change. Neighbors and former members recently shared their memories of the building and perspectives on its role as a center for community. A tour of the building will follow a presentation of excerpts from these oral history interviews.
The program is presented by RI Jewish Historical Association, the RI Historical Society, and Nate Weisenberg, a master’s candidate in the Public Humanities program at Brown University.
Please note: The building is under renovation so please wear comfortable closed footwear. The space may be difficult to negotiate for people with impaired mobility.
