~Wish for Whatever You Want~
One day the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) asked Rabi'ah ibn Kab (radi Allahu anhu): “Wish for whatever you want from me.”
Upon that Rabi'ah (radi Allahu anhu) said: “I wish to be your friend in Paradise.”
The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Can’t you wish for any other thing?”
Rabi'ah (radi Allahu anhu) replied: “This is my one and only wish.”
Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Help me for your own self by prostrating (offering Salaat) a lot.” [Muslim, Kitaab as-Salaat]
Commentary: Rabi'ah (radi Allahu anhu) had dedicated himself to the Messenger of Allah’s service. He used to stay with the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) for the night and would perform services such as bringing water for him (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) to use for his Wudhu. This he did voluntarily in his desire to serve Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), because he loved him.
Consider what feelings the Companions had for the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). How do I treat the people that I am indebted to for guiding me towards Allah (subhana wa ta’ala)?
When he was asked to wish for something in return for his service, Rabi'ah (radi Allahu anhu) asked only to be his friend for eternity. How wise he was! He didn’t wish for any house, woman or wealth. He wished instead for the high levels of Paradise where he could enjoy the Prophet’s companionship and where all the things people covet he would get for keeps. May we also be friends and companions of Prophet Muhammad (sal Allahu alahi wa sallam) in Jannah, ameen!
