Dear Wiki Wednesday People,

Both the PortlandWiki.org and PDX.Wiki.org wikis are back up. Sorry
for the headaches.

Kotra: I especially want to say "thanks" for all your efforts in
looking into possible issues that may have resulted in our wikis going
off-line in the first place. Like Mark Dilley mentioned earlier, the
wikis went down Thursday evening last week (ironically, they went off-
line while Mark and I were meeting at Backspace to work on
PortlandWiki).

Apparently it was DreamHost "upgrades" to their MySQL servers that
caused the problems in the first place. Here's a response I got back
from DH the 2nd time I harassed them on this issue:

--- begin Dream Host snip ---
Please accept our apologies for the issues you've experienced. In
order to increase long-term stability for your databases, we moved the
physical machine on which your PSMySQL is hosted, as outlined in this
status post:

http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2009/11/12/mysql-moves-tonight-november-12th-2009/

It seems that some of your database tables were of the InnoDB type,
rather than the standard MyISAM. This is important to note as InnoDB
tables store their data in a different manner, which is much more
finicky when it comes to the MySQL Daemon exiting incorrectly, and
aren't nearly as resistant to corruption. Fortunately we did take
measures to prevent any data loss before running the move and have now
restored these tables from a backup.

(restored db's: ... portlandwiki_org pdx_wiki_org ...)

Thanks for your patience. Please let us know if you run into any
further issues.
--- end Dream Host snip ---

Judging from the DH feedback, I suppose the next step is to figure out
how to reconfigure the databases from the InnoDB format to the
"standard MyISAM" format...

Wow - sounds like this has been a nightmare for you folks! You have my
sympathies (I'm only a VERY peripheral member of this group, being Pete
Forsyth's mom who lives in the Boston area - but I do usually check out
your messages).

Best, Martha

Thanks Dave for the update! All I know about the database table types is that MyISAM is the more common/standard type, as they said. Not sure if we *need* to switch (if it is even possible) or if they're just making excuses for screwing up, or whatever. I know next to nothing about MySQL development so I probably can't help much in that regard.
