Hello fello fit Rubyists.

Has anyone found an outdoor pull-up bar hiding in a Portland park somewhere? I moved here from SF and there is outdoor workout equipment all over the place. I was curious if we had something like that here in Portland. I’ve had a hard time finding anything and ya’ll are the largest group of PDXers I know.

If we did it would rust and be unusable because of our horrible weather patterns.

Honestly, I would recommend singing up for 24hr fitness in the Pearl or wait for the new Planet Granite opening up soon.

Not necessarily; we have plenty of painted monkey bars and play structures at parks and schools that don't rust. Perhaps those could be repurposed?

After re-reading that, it sounds like it discounts our parks.  Our parks are awesome.

If you are looking for something like muscle beach though for weight training or even crossfit like stuff we had to turn indoors.

For endurance training we have quite a bit, but definitely buy good rain gear.

The parks are super nice here. I feel like parents give me dirty looks when I workout around their kids though. That could totally be my imagination.

I’ll checkout some of the crossfit gyms here in the Perl, that’s a good recommendation. I worry they’ll actually make me do crossfit, but maybe one of them is nice enough to just let me pay and exercise.

Hi Chris,

I'm pretty sure the playground area at laurelhurst (south section) has adult-height pull up bars, and potentially col summers as well.

Enjoy!

I'm not as fit as I'd like to be, but many of the parks around town have fitness circuits.  I believe Wilshire in NE, is one, but there's more - even in St. Helens - the main park there has a large fitness circuit.  Some of the corporate campus/parks around the metro area maintain outdoor fitness gear, as well, which aren't always on private property or they don't restrict access even if it technical is.  There are a *lot* of outdoor fitness groups as well as trainers/gyms/companies that have outdoor programs.

Check meetup.com - there are *tons* of fitness groups.  Scan the groups or ping a few likely looking organizers for tips.

http://outdoor-fitness.meetup.com/cities/us/or/portland/

Google up "portland oregon outdoor fitness" and you'll get hits on trainers/gyms that have programs - some of them might be willing to share info without you buying membership.

Sounds like it's info that definitely needs a public aggregator, though.  :-)

There's also a pull-up bar near the playground at Mt. Tabor.  At least there was a few years ago.

Peninsula Park has two by the tennis courts if you're a North Portlander.

There's two at Duniway Park, north side of the asphalt track.

I can confirm the pull up bar in the park at Mt, Tabor as I use it
almost every time I run to the top. I've mostly been using monkey bars
for working on pull ups as they are way more common, also they are at
the closest park to me Creston Park. I saw a guy doing muscle ups on
them yesterday. Let me know if you find something good. I've scouted a
few places, and not found much.

I was pretty slammed with work at the time and didn't get a chance to reply, but figure it's still worth doing so.

I'm not a Crossfitter (or otherwise engaged in conditioning), but I have taken up barbell weightlifting in the last 6 months. I have a power rack, barbell, and 300lbs of plates out in my garage if anybody wants to talk Ruby and lift heavy things.
