Hi All,
Just a quick update.
The Feb meetup will have lightning speakers on "origin" stories. Hoping it's a good filler that gets people excited about coding again while we figure out the March+ topics and get survey results. We're trying to get a variety of speakers (eg life experiences/backgrounds + time developing) and so far have these speakers confirmed:
- Megan Bigelow (DevOps perspective, also want to let folks know about PDXWIT; Megan is the founder--I believe this will actually be on Perl :D )
- Moof Mayeda (Ruby dev @ NR, great speaker; need to follow-up on specifics)
- Rico Jones (I believe the official title of this talk is "The Joys of Excel")
- Janik Knittle (need to follow-up w/ Janik on his talk)
- Dana Scheider (need to follow-up w/ Dana on this too)
I've reached out to a couple of other folks and am still waiting to hear back. I would like at least one dev who started coding w/in the last year or so. Likewise, it would be great to have a dev who learned to code before the internet talk about their experiences; SO if anyone on this list would like to give a lightning talk about why they started coding OR knows someone who would be great for this (again we are looking for funny/inspirational/universal stories), please let me know. (No slides necessary, just a photo and bio and to be clear we are trying to capture the earliest joys/stories of coding so it doesn't have to be about Ruby)
Regarding March, we've got a tentative speaker for a sr dev topic on enumerables w/ 3rd party APIs and are looking to book a jr dev speaker on their top 5 gems/books (ie just a nice resource sharing presentation that will most likely cater to newer devs but might have something for a sr dev or folks that largely work solo).
You've probably seen the emails and slack announcements about the survey. If we close it on the 19th, we can share the results at the Feb meeting and start working them into the March+ meetup. Please RT the tweet and encourage folks to fill out the survey. ALSO PLEASE FILL OUT THE SURVEY :D
Teaser: we've got Yehuda Katz pencilled in for June!
Thoughts/Questions/Concerns?
Thanks!
