I wonder how small/cheap/light you could make an aerostat. I'm envisioning a stage full of little glowing floaty things. It could be as simple as helium balloons tied down with a LED inside. If you added circuitry you could trigger different colors or timings. You could make it more complex with a pulley and motor system to make the lights float around.

Much more complicated would be little steerable blimps with lights. You could program them to fly around in neat patterns and do stuff to the music. Ofc that would be a ton of work.

You also might have fun with glow wire. Outline your guitar, drums etc with it.

This is one of the more impressive "glowing floaty" band light shows I've seen lately; in interviews he talks about how he can trigger them manually, based on sound, or on a pattern. I like how it's a circular/immersive experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR5oYHZZWE4&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Just a couple days ago I released a new library that makes large-scale LED projects at video refresh speeds much easier, using the cheapest addressable LED strips.  If you missed the article on Hack-a-Day and other blogs, here's the link:

Here's a project Hans & Alex built several months ago, using an earlier USB-to-LED effort with the more expensive types of LED strips.  It turned out pretty awesome.
