P.S. I suggest using stepper motors with hall effect sensors

You're close to one actually. Check out SurplusGizmos on Cornelius Pass Rd. just north of 26. Some new stuff but obviously more that is not.

Nathan, I can't offer much about BrainSilo - I haven't spent much time there. We do have several communities in the area that are active:

There's naturally a lot of overlap with folks. Welcome to the Portland area. It's a wonderful place :)

For electronics, you might check this place out:

I went there when they were "norvac", and they had decent stuff - but not always the cheapest prices (obviously ordering from mouser/digikey is going to be cheaper, but then you have to pay shipping and wait a week).

I also have the openSpectrometer.com project, this is stalled because
I was thinking about how to best mount all the optics in a fashion
that would work in kit form, or that someone inexperienced with optics
could put it together and not have a horribly out-of-whack optics path
(little alignment issues can make a device like this not perform well
at all)

For that project I need some help with mechanical drawing and 3D CAD
modelling. I think I could prototype the optics system with 3D printed
plastic, and if it works, possibly raise funding to get an injection
mold.

Software on that would be some pattern recognition/matching stuff
(matching the spectral signature of a standard within a mixture, or
comparing two samples to see if they both contain a known signature)
