Are there any West Side or Beaverton/Hillsboro people? Interest in a suburban hackerspace?

I'd be much more inclined to be a regular member of something that was 5-ish miles away from me, versus most activities I see being on the east side of Portland.

Just putting a feeler out there.

I am. I've spent quite a bit of time exploring the idea as a commercial venture. Brainsilo has always been just a bit too far away for it to be practical for membership for me. I think it's a great idea.

I think there would be sufficient interest, myself included. TechShop went under in Beaverton because of the overpriced membership. There is even some new commercial space in Tigard, across the railroad tracks from the transit center that would have excellent access for us west-siders. :-)

There are some warehouse units around the Elmonica area that always catch my eye every time I go by there.  Some bonuses include it being pretty central to the max, close to where I live, and adjacent to the science and tech highschool.

I'm pretty dedicated to making brainsilo work, and I have been hoping for some sort of brainsilo::west expansion sometime in the future.  That said, I'm willing to throw down some cash towards another space if someone else wants to make it happen, but having a cheap, accessible hackerspace close to downtown is important to me, so that's where most of my efforts will be focused until I am convinced that brainsilo is operating sustainably.

I'd be up for a westside silo, but also agree with Dean.  The arms won't last without the heart.

There are a lot of reasons that TechShop went under, but I think in order to have a functioning hackerspace we'd absolutely want to avoid getting into the same position as they were. I have quite a lot of information about that that I'm happy to share in a more appropriate settings.

A satellite space of brainsilo is an interesting idea. I'd be concerned about one space canabalizing the other. I think it would be more beneficial to be a separate entity and encourage strong ties between each other. (Tool exchange, materials exchange, whatever)

Elmonica/SW 170th Ave MAX station is just barely over 5 miles from me, any idea of how rent would compare to where brain silo is now? Would others interested be averse to having DIYbio lab stuff going on? We'd of course have a similar structure to Biocurious or Genspace (meaning there's a board of safety and experiment approval).

Elmonica is quite close to me too (it's my preferred max station at the moment)

I think most any project would be welcome, my personal interests and efforts would be going towards electronics and robotics. Brainsilo's approach is a "doacracy", if you want to do something, do it, and other people will probably do it too. I think it's a good approach. One I haven't really been able to apply to brainsilo due to not really being able to get out there.

Dean, what warehouses are you thinking of?

Between the Elmonica and Merlo max stations, just behind the bushes (not the side with the train yard and power station, the other side) there is a large industrial area with some warehouses.  Now that I am looking into it, it appears the spots are occupied by a bag company and a metal company, so we might be out of luck right now, though I could swear I saw a "space available" sign out there at some point.  I know the office park around the Beaverton creek max station usually has openings, and there are quite a few openings I see by the Beaverton round (http://www.bgproperties.com/property_availabilities.php?property=1).

Remember though, it's not just about finding enough people to pay for it, you need support from people willing to throw down enough cash to keep it alive, even when membership is down.  Most importantly, you need someone crazy enough to sign a lease making them financially responsible if things take a turn for the worst :-)

I have some ideas involving a 20ft cargo trailer for a mobile situation. I might be crazy but maybe just crazy enough. I'd be happy to be the heart of that kind of an operation. I also have a cargo van that would be the power behind the punch. I'll bring up more ideas today at Brainsilo.
