A former brewmaster from Anchor Brewing has worked with Brew Your Own magazine to provide guidelines and a sample recipe for Anchors annual Christmas Ale.

To quote from the article, “the beer has never been a fixed recipe. Not only did it change from year to year, it changed with the multiple brewings within the year and the brewery blended batches to achieve what they were looking for. So there is no such thing as a single clone recipe for the overall beer or even for a specific year. We have crafted a recipe based on his input and he confirmed it is in line with something they would have brewed even if it does not perfectly match any secret recipe they have brewed before.”

Here is a link to the article and sample 5 gallon recipe.

Who’s going to give this a go?

When they made the announcement last year that they were discontinuing it I grabbed the large format bottle for that reason (and fill it of course!). Plan is to brew it with my neighbors and hopefully make it an annual thing where we tweak it a tad each year. Lost Abbey's Gnoel de Abbey is one of my favorite winter ales (more Belgian yeast character and a touch of roast), so taking inspiration from both.

You sure the crown cap is standard size on that?

We should have a club challenge and each make one of these.

I really like making belgian Christmas ale every year. I might want to also have something so similar. Maybe we could take this idea and open it up a little. Club challenge: Christmas ale. Each member's personal take on the concept.

I prefer this idea -- I really don't have much use for a keg of spiced beer.

Ill brew whatever, and always like an assignment; but was never a fan of anchor christmas (at least the dusty ones pulled out of somebody's cellar of unknown providence and i have to smile say thank you, this is very interesting) so i prefer the open concept.

I love Winter Ales, so I am surprised I've never made one.
Here's a list of sample recipes to get everyone's imaginations going:  Search Recipe Results - Beer Recipe Cloud by BeerSmith (beersmithrecipes.com)
I use BeerSmith's enormous recipe lists for when I want to combine two styles.

I’m brewing my holiday beer (not the Anchor recipe) today — should be ready for the December meeting! Anyone else planning to bring one?

Scott, I was kind of hoping you'd be putting an entire ginger bread house into the mash.
