Hello, fellow WINNERS!
Just wanted to blast this out in case you hadn't yet heard… we, Portland Brewers Collective, were just awarded the Gambrinus Club Award at NHC!
This is essentially the Ninkasi Award for homebrew clubs, based on final round performance (wins : entries ratio) and overall awesomeness.
Okay, so that last part is obviously unquantifiable, but between Russell's epic performance (Gold in German Pils, Gold in Smoked Beer, and Silver in IPA), my first-ever national medals (Silver in Light Lager and Bronze in Euro Sour), and Jeff getting his national due for his work in British styles and a bronze medal for his wonderful English Brown Ale - with additional excellent scores and mini-BOS advances rung up by Mark, Tarn, and Scott - statistically we medaled 1 out of every 3 beers this club sent to nationals. And that's how you win the Gambrinus Club Award!
Allegedly we will be given a large trophy, so we'll have to plan a celebratory pub crawl or something where we bring it along wherever we go, or let each club member bring it home for a day and do whatever they want with it, like they do with the Stanley Cup.
But mostly, I want us all to recognize that this award is literally for all of us. Whether you enter competitions or not, we are only here because of each other. Every member of this club puts innumerable hours and hard work into their craft, driven by genuine curiosity and a desire to make the best beverages we can, while also freely sharing knowledge, encouragement, equipment, ideas, honest feedback, with deliberately low-barrier access and a genuine love for beer and the community it brings. This is our unique "cultural ferment", and we just rose to the top on the world's largest stage of homebrewing greatness.
So pat yourself on the back, pour yourself a pint, and revel a little in PBC's moment in the spotlight!
Cheers,
Ian
