Hey all,

This is something I’ve mentioned to Ian and others in the past, and have always wanted to do. Maybe someone this year wants to brew a “live hop” beer.

This would involve brewing at or near your hop plants, and when it comes to adding hops, drop your live, still in the ground, hop bines into the boil. The absolute freshest fresh hop beer possible!

Anyone think they want to have a go? I

Cheers

What an unhinged (unpicked?) idea! But I have to imagine all the excess plant (leaf and bine) matter don’t taste good - otherwise brewers would be using those already.

Or maybe they do taste great but have never been included because it's just not very practical to do so.

The young vines are ate and used in cooking and leaves too. Young vines are said to taste like beer and asparagus. I'll have to try some next year.

Right. Hop shoots are eaten in salads in Belgium

He's also used the leaves in Dolmas in place of grape leaves so not toxic as mature, in theory. Could be fun to see if leaves impart a flavor in a tea.

This feels so conceptually wrong, to take a part of the plant still in the ground and boil it alive; hop torture. My plants are like my babies, i have a hard enough time harvesting a cabbage.
