As mentioned earlier, I have progressed in the effort to visit and read at
least one Chapter of the Bible in each Portland area park this year. I
have now visited just slightly over 100.

My appologies for the size of the list, and yes, some reorganization will
have to come at some point in time.

Are there any comments on any of the parks on the list so far? Anything
vital I've left off of the brief description of someone's favorite park?

I'm still trying to decide how far from the urban area really constitutes
"in the Portland area". What I decided to do was cover everything that is
indesputable first and see how much year there is left. I still haven't
covered anything maintained by the Tualatin Valley Parks & Recreation
District, and they have just as many if not more parks in operation as the
city of Portland.

I will eventually. Its in the median of Front Avenue / Natio Parkway, so
what I was planning to do with that one was pick something reasonably
short and read it while standing on the median of that particular section
of road - maybe even put my toe in it if there's room.

Mill Ends is small, but Hazelwood Park or Canemah Park (not Old Canemah
Park) in Oregon City aren't a whole lot larger.

Downtown is relatively easy to visit, so I haven't really concentrated on
that area too much. I visited all of the downtown parks on the list
without really trying that hard.

The hardest are going to be Peter Kerr Park, Goat Island Park, Gary Island
County Park, Flag Island County Park, and JJ Colins Memorial Park. All of
those are islands. I've already got Goat Island park on there as a park I
failed to visit, as my understanding is that it is very difficult to get
there even with a skilled boat operator, due to the way the currents
around Oregon City run.

The problem with the city of Portland web site is that it is by park name
(just as my list is) and I still haven't found an official name for the
park at SW Upper Hall Street and 14th in downtown (I call it Hall Park on
my list). Possibly this is owned by the state of Oregon and is classified
as a state park due to its creation during I-405 construction, but that is
a hazardous guess at best. In any event, no one seems to want to claim
ownership of that park, as I was unable to find a sign identifying who
owns it. Yet, it has a public drinking fountain and park benches, so it
doesn't appear to belong to one of the buildings nearby.

Other observations:

That thing the North Clackamas Parks & Recreation District chose as their
emblem sure looks like some artists conceptions of marijuana that I have
seen. I think it's supposed to be a dogwood blossom, though.

Almost all Portland public parks (including Ira's Fountain in downtown
Portland) that I have visited so far have a standard issue sign in them
that says "Alcoholic Beverages Prohibited." The exception is Bloomington
Park in Southeast Portland, which reads "Alcoholic Beverages and Sexual
Activity Prohibited." Does this mean that sexual activity is allowed in
all other Portland parks? Or is sexual activity *while drinking*
specifically prohibited in Bloomington Park?

Nice job so far...here are some minor corrections you might be
interested in:

2.Name of Park: Albina
(Formal name "Lillis/Albina Park")
Location: NE Russell & Sacramento
(actually N Flint & Russell)

7 Name of Park: Beaver Creek (? - Name not on any official sign I found)
Location: Beaver Creek between Beaver Creek Lane and Evans
Avenue, Troutdale
Weedin park?...Lewellyn Park? Kiru Park? Where exactly are you talking
about?
East or west of the creek itself?

20.Name of Park: Council Crest
Location: West Hills of Portland
(why not say "Just south of Humphrey Park Rd & SW Patton Dr"?)

51.Name of Park: Hillside Center Park
Location: West Hills, Portland (NW Alpine Terrace & Ariel
Terrace)

52.Name of Park: Hollman
Location: West Hills, Portland (NW Aspen & Raleigh)

58.Name of Park: Kiku (actually it's Kiru)

63.Name of Park: Lents
Location: SE Mall & 33nd Ave, Portland
Lents Park is at SE 92nd & Holgate...Kenilworth Park is on 33rd &
Holgate/Mall.

79.Name of Park: Pat Pfeifer (not Piefer?)

83.Name of Park: Portland Heights
Location: West Hills of Portland (SW Patton & Old Orchhard)

And you're posting in "pdx.general" and "pdx.singles" exactly why

Really? Kiku is what several maps call it, and I'm fairly certain that is
what the sign says that is in the park. What is your source, so that I
may send a correction notice to the map publisher? I'll check the sign
again when I visit Lewellyn Park or one of the other city of Troutdale
parks.

Straddles the creek, between SE Evans Avenue and SE Beaver Creek Lane. Go
into Kiru/Kiku park, and take the trail straight back. According to the
maps, what you call Kiru Park ends at the edge of the cliff, some distance
from the creek. Continue on the trail through the woods, and it leads to
a fairly extensive set of trails that reach far beyond the borders of what
the park on the map shows. There is a really nice bridge at the base of
the cliff that goes over to an area on the other side, towards SE Evans
Avenue, and another that is paved for a short section, that goes fairly
far north, almost as far as Harlow House Park. This area, which is
obviously fairly well maintained for public use by someone, isn't on any
maps that I have seen so far.

Did they expand the park? If so, then why does it not show up on the
maps? (Though, considering that two other parks I have visited so far,
one fairly good sized (Nadaka, Gresham) aren't on any of the maps, this is
perhaps not too surprising.) My best guess is that this is one of the
spaces that Metro purchased with the open spaces bond fund and then agreed
for the city of Troutdale develop and maintain, but when I was there they
didn't even have the traditional "open spaces bond fund Rah-Rah Metro"
sign that are located at the rest of the parks so developed. It is
possible I missed the sign, if it does exist. Was it part of the Harlow
House lands? Almost certainly, as they at one time owned pretty much
everything that is back in there, so perhaps those lands came with the
house? If that is the case, though, then why doesn't the trail to the top
of the hill in Harlow House Park connect to these trails from further
south? Perhaps it connects to Glenn Otto Community Park? It is hard to
say, as I didn't have a chance to examine the part of the area on the
other side of the bridge. The maps, however, show Glenn Otto Park
stopping well short of any connection with Kiru Park. I attempted to find
a connection to the bridge from the Glenn Otto Park end, but there doesn't
appear to be any.

Next time I get a fairly decent chunk of day available, I plan to go out
there and explore the area a bit more. Possibly there is an actual
official entrance and sign somewhere at one of the other trails I didn't
explore, and the area on the other side of the bridge (possibly from SE
Evans Loop) looked a little more developed than on the west side of the
Creek.

It is really hard to say, from the angle that I came at it, just what this
is, but as best as I can tell, an entire City of Troutdale park about the
size of Portland's Laurelhurst Park is simply missing from the maps,
including the latest Thomas Guide that I have of the area. Believe me,
I've looked even on friends maps, it somehow was missed (but Nadaka is
also off of most maps too, including Thomas Brothers maps, so perhaps the
purchase with Metro funds of that park indicates that somehow parks
purchased using that fund don't show up on maps.)

> 79.Name of Park: Pat Pfeifer (not Piefer?)

According to the maps, it is spelled Pfeifer, and I remember checking that
against the spelling on the sign in the park. It is possible I misread it
once, but I don't think I did it twice (it's possible though).

Thanks for your comments

A friend who used to live near there...I thought I rememebered a sign
saying
Kiru...I've got an old Thomas map around here somewhere...hang
on...hmmm,
my '95 Thomas Guide says "Kiru" also; my '02 is in the car & it's
raining
too hard right now to check it.

Wasn't there when I was...I'll have to visit it again.

Sounds like it.

For reasons of National Security?

Try to find someone at Metro to tell you where the "Sentinel Tree" is.

The 1997 Thomas Guide that I have says Kiku, among other sources.
Interesting. I wonder if there was some sort of typo in the city
government or at Thomas Brothers that mis-labeled the park for a few
years.

Anyone else have any information that supports either one or the other of
the two names?

> ...which park would that be?

The area that we are talking about between Kiru/Kiku Park and SE Evans
Avneue. According to the maps, Kiru / Kiku Park ends approximately at the
forest boundary, even on the very latest Thomas Guides that I have seen.
The size of the area with the forest, trails, and bridge is about the size
of Laurelhurst Park, at least, and appears to be accounted for separately
from Kiku / Kiru Park to some extent.

Well, considering that PDX is actually the airport, none of us actually
live there and I, for one, don't go there very often.
