Oregon L5 Society and PNW AIAA Joint Event

Commercial Mining with a Lunar Elevator

By Charles F. Radley

The Earth's Moon is a treasure trove of mineral resources, such as precious metals, rare earth elements, Helium-3 and oxygen for propellants. However, the cost of landing on the Moon is currently very high. Using modern fibers we can build a lunar elevator which reduces the cost of lunar landing sixfold. Furthermore, it makes the cost of collecting material from the Moon and sending it to Earth essentially free. The lunar elevator will pay for itself after nineteen payload cycles. The lunar elevator represents a game changing technology which will open up the Moon to commercial mining.

Charles Radley is President of the Oregon L5 Society, and an Associate Fellow of the AIAA. He has worked extensively in the space industry since 1981 as a product assurance and systems engineer. He is an adviser to Liftport Group.

sure count me in, I have a question or 2.

First one is how dose China fit into the equation? If they get on the moon won't they claim it for themselves?

Second I have a plane ticket that I have to use by the 30th any good things to see around Kennedy Space center?

Hi Damani,

1) China is a signatory to the 1967 UN Treaty where they have agreed not to claim territory on the Moon or elsewhere in space.  They have not indicated any intention to withdraw from the treaty.  I do not have a crystal ball and cannot predict their future actions

2) Have you been to central Florida?  The NASA KSC Visitors center is large and you could spend most of a day there .. plus they have a couple of tours you can take.   Then the USAF Cape Canaveral Ar Force Museum is on the other side, I think they are only open Sundays.  In Titusville there is the Astronaut Hall of Fame and some space souvenir shops. If teh weather is nice it is pleasant to hang out at Cocoa Beach, or Playalinda Beach.   If you want to buy surf gear, so to Ron John's Surf shop in Cocoa Beach.    There is a planetarium at the Brevard County Community College.   There are a lot of state parks in the area, I like Blue Springs state park.   There are lots of touristy things, in Kissimme near Orlando, like Disneyworld, Epcot.   You can drive on the beach at Daytona Beach.   Embry Riddle Aeronautical University is in Daytona Beach.    In Orlando is the John Young Planetarium.

Have fun.

CFR.

Great Thanks,

I have only been to Embry Riddle when I was going to school there. But never ventured off the campus. I will have to plan a trip to go there soon.

Thanks,

Damani
